add a couple 110's around the edges like a bottom edge of the opening and you could pick up rats or mink along with the beaver, space them out away from the beaver trap

use snares at pinch points...if you have access to a beaver carcass or deer carcass...put in middle and set snares 20 or so yards away at pinch points...if no access to carcasses..use your favorite canine lure and/or bait...it will work as a draw....
when I use a carcass I actually wait til they are eatin on it before I set up...they will generally make their own trails but will use yours sometimes

generally I think coyotes like to see all around the set however I have caught enough on the very edge to know that is not always the case....coyotes will travel the edge tight many times...especially in crop rows

I rattle cats up, too, the first time. When they insist on repeat offending, a good soaking with water usually does the trick. Stand the cage on end to restrict the cat's movement and either turn the hose on or dump a bucket full on it. Don't just get them wet, really soak them down like you were trying to almost drown 'em. P.S. Did I mention that I really don't like cats? so basically water boarding cats

store bought molasses mixed with shelled corn....works great on coon in cages, leave some outside the cage so the cat can smell it and satisfy its curiousity...coon will eat it up...if it wasn't for the corn I would eat it lol

go get ya some sardines in oil and salmon flavored cat food, mix together and add in some peanut butter once heated up so it is liquid and you can mix all together...gives you a thick paste...also I usually add an ounce or 2 of anise oil to spice it up

killer clips on garden stakes, screw the clip on about 8" above the point of the stake so you can stake the trap as well as secure it

snare yes as can't hook a snare to a drag but if it is a foot trap or conibear then it would be fine

got to be another story to go with it, it is not illegal to fasten a trap to a drag in iowa...no matter what the drag is

Why would you tumble a coon that will be finished fur in? LLL I am with you Larry, the only part that I visible is the window area of a finished coon. does it really make that much of a difference in price to justify the extra time?

another nice part with the clips is you can take the trap off, set the trap and clip it back on and put the trap in position at the set...I prefer the longer chain with mid swivel, I am not so concerned with drowning the animal as I am with getting him away from the set so it doesn't destroy it...cold water will usually help with the drowning anyway

Depends on how far you want to bend over and how many times. I add a mid swivel to the chain and call it good. Also if you are running pockets it is hard to set them for mink with a short chain. LLL when you are as big as I am, you hate to bend all the way over a lot. all of mine are like Larry's, mid swivel and end swivel with a quick link

only thing I didn't read in all that advice is that the fish stick set has to be in/over the water otherwise it is illegal if done on dry land

use whole kernel corn for bait in your dps mixed with cherry oil, no cats, not much for skunks and you will catch coons...they are comin there for a corn base food anyway

Correct me if I am wrong but most coon hunters skin where they shoot em...they don't carry out the carcass

this year it may have more benefit to leave the trailer attached to the boat so you can get "downstream" better

I have toyed with the idea of having a colony style trap set with a hole in the middle going to a cage that is above it and still half out of the water, allowing any caught rats to get ,to air...of course not fail safe but it is an idea...one I have done on squirrels in Missouri to catch all of them out of a hole in a roof or siding quickly...I have seen pictures of catching rats in float sets with a cage trap on top here is link to post on tman with rat in cage on a float www.trapperman.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3973044/1/Making_Muskrat_Floats

I had heard that using a catch pole on an otter can be detrimental to the animal after released, some were dying shortly after due to the cable getting so tight it was breaking the arteries in the neck...
I just tapped that one on the head enough to knock him out, took trap off quick and drew my pistol in case he decided to come at me...he didn't and after a few minutes he regained composure and ran off

best otter set I had last year was elbow pvc set baited with chunked bluegill and shellfish oil and a duke #1.5 under it...got 4 otters in first 2 checks at the same location, caught total of 7 last year, obviously only kept 3, turned in 3 and let one go

tex, in iowa it can be exposed over water if I am reading it correctly...in Missouri exposed bait if I remember correctly has to be 20 feet or yards from any traps...that is exposed from birds of prey

limited experience in dps, just over 50 coon out of 14 dps, at first part of year I tried the golf balls on, found it to be a hassle, then I just filled my dps with the bait, I use whole kernel corn...1 gallon mixed with 1 ounce of cherry or anise oil worked fine, even in the frozen temps. mice took some and caught a squirrel by both front feet which was comical in itself. but didn't deter me from catchin the coons

hey rookie...where are you from? if you are near central iowa would be happy to show you what we are talking about...also...the fta central city would be a good place to learn as well at funke's on august 18 at state center iowa at the open house there..and I would be a fool not to mention the Iowa Trappers Association convention coming up September 6 and 7th at britt, ia which is just west of clear lake, ia. I hardly ever get much sleep there but I always come out a lot smarter than when I came in and it don't take much lol.

hey...where did you get the cable? I would get the snare builder pack from snareshop.com if you want to build them yourself...it comes with a sample snare already put together to model after....good job trying but the cable you are using is too kinked up to do the job effectively...

which lock do you like and why? also how long have you been snaring?
I like the big adc bent washer lock or the cam lock. slides down fast on a non loaded snare plus the adc lock is a wider surface so not to have as much damage although I personally think there will be some type of damage to a snared coon...but not so much with a coyote or beaver..
just my thoughts.

i have a fiberglass basket from funke's...I like it a lot...although thinking of using a tube from drain hole so it drags on the ground lol, you put in a wet beaver or coon and your backside is soaked by the time you get back to the truck...mine has the outside compartment.....the lid broke off within a couple of months but I still use it...
