How do you rig up your FS sets?
What kind of stakes? wood? electrical fence posts?
one trap? two traps?
Thanks Brett

3/8" metal e-fence post, two traps, something to keep the traps from sliding down and jacking the stake and the head is wired on.

Mine is a 3 foot 3/8 rebar. 6 inch T. If placed right you only need 1 trap and can run a drowner with it. If out in the open then drowner is tough because they can go either way around the stake. I use 1 trap, 2 traps may be better a few spots but 1 will do for me. Fish heads on both sides of the T. Would be nice if I had a FAST and EASY way to secure the head to the T but I have not found that yet!

If you go out and buy the red posts like I did. Be SURE to weld the spades on, or they WILL pop off while hammering in once in a while, or get really weak. Lost a catch or two that way last year

I am leaning towards electric posts with the spade on them.
Is this enough to hold two coon?
Stake the traps through their swivels?
Where would one find these stakes for sale? Price?
Thanks all.... More picture of setups won't hurt anyone!

Brett, You can buy the galvanized /lighter ones at Menards right now for .99. Like Nick said you will need to put an extra weld on the spade. I run 2 traps on drowners when I use them. If you are not I would suggest to use a short chain so they don't get the top of the fs. That is how foot damage occurs. I never use this early because the fish head spoils fast. By running 2 traps on drowners you will double often. But sometimes you get lucky with no drowners........... This set used at the right time is lethal on coon and mink. Like any other set trap placement is critical. LLL

Looks like your drowning cable needs tightened up LLL.

I would like to try a few fish sticks this year. LLL, you say that trap placement is critical. Are you placeing the trap between the fs and the bank? I will probably use one trap to start due to limited numbers.

I have been useing the 3/8 electric fence posts, but I think I will make my own out of rerod and some triangle pieces I can get where I work. They might be a little better quality than the ones that are made these days. It seems to be hard to get people to part with the stakes they used to make.

Looks like your drowning cable needs tightened up LLL. Gene I took over 20 coon in that set last season so I am sure they had that cable all jacked up . Look how bent the fish stick was. They could not stay out of this one .Notice the size of those coon and how for some reason the creek is 2' wider at the catch site ? LLL

I've said many times that mid to late season coon don't expire from hypothermia on a regular basis. Larry's pics are testament to that.

Muskrat works really good. But make sure you wire them on. they are very easy for coon to steal. I probably had one coon for every 2-3 stolen baits last season because they weren't wired. And It's not much fun walking down a slippery bank, just to replace a bait!!!

Have used them for years without such problems and unless they were put in the restricted exposed bait areas the warden could not say much if it did happen. I have caught more than one bobcat in them though. LLL

Would a muskrat be any more attractive to soaring birds than a fish?

I am wondering that same thing. Any way around the exposed and still have a decent set out of it?

how do you guys get around the exposed bait rule if your in one of the areas??? Take a wad of grass and wrap it around your fish stick with a piece of wire to hold it in place.

That would work for the first coon but if you use a drowner you still could have exposed bait. The first one pulls the grass off and gets caught going down the drowner or slide where they cannot reach the now exposed bait. If you have two traps set now you have a coon in one trap and an exposed bait set that would technically be illegal. The chances of this happening are not great but it happens. Just saying....LLL

Is it ok to not run a drowner rig off a fs with a 3/8 rerod for the stick and just wire the traps to the stick or do the coons pull it out and run?

I used the rat on a stake set 2 years ago and wrapped it in grass. It is a great attractor but I caught way to many soaring birds for my liking. I believe these birds have a very acute sense of smell, more than we would ever think. I have not had fish heads to use but am going to try them this year.

I'm trying to figure out why you are even bothering with all the hassle, Birds, Fence posts, when you have open water. Why not make a pocket. Yeah I know banks frozen, but a couple wacks with a sharp spade and that crust comes off.

A FS in the right place is absolutely the most effective set I have EVER used!! Hands down no question! I do not have 20 years of experience like most do but I have caught a few and it works for me!

I see the FS as another thing to pull out of my bag of tricks. They have there place and time just like most sets do. I chose the sets I make based on the situation that I have. I like BE sets for rats and mink in spots that I run for a long period of time, in places that are perfect for them. But I never wander very far looking for "the spot" if its not there I use a different set. For me FS fits well under shallow bridges with no real funnel spots and on wide sloping banks also with no good funnels. I can see them working below a high bank also and will try that in some spots where it is too sandy to keep a pocket working real well.
