I talked to my CO on this and was given the OK for the rifel and hand gun in the ditch. I think it's all up to the CO. For those that have a CWP how many carry on the ATV? What happens when a deputy sheriff has a bone to pick with you or another CO comes along and see's you shooting a roadditch with a rifle....Just saying Well if they give him a ticket I'm sure his CO will go to court and tell them he said it is ok to ignore the law. I'm sure the judge would throw it out. ~ADC~

Can anyone tell me why it is illegal to plink a mink skipping across a field with a 22? And don't give me any BS about it not being ethical.

Never looked at it that way. My CO did make it clear that if I was shooting any thing other than a trapped animal the ticket would be coming. So everyone uses a bat in the ROW or equipment that dispaches when the catch is made... Jusk asking. I share the ROW with a few other trapper and they all use hand guns. What do those that use a an ATV do?

Just seems to me there would be a lot of damage. There are a lot of laws out there that we may think are stupid, but they are there for a reason. In my opinion just follow the rules and don't pay the price. Pretty simple..

What do those that use a an ATV do? Hand guns and shotguns are legal to use in a ROW. Not sure on the laws concerning an ATV. Since ATV's can not be legally driven on a road I do not believe you need your gun cased, but I am not 100% sure on this one. It has been a while since hunter ED and until this year I didn't have an ATV so I didn't pay much attention. Below is a qoute from the IA DNR regulations book concerning firearms and roads. Shooting Rifle Over Water or Highway You cannot shoot any rifle on or over any of the public highways or waters of the state or any railroad right-of-way. You cannot discharge a shotgun shooting a slug, pistol or revolver on or over a public roadway (see diagram below). Additionally, no person shall discharge a rifle, including a muzzleloading rifle or musket, or a handgun from a highway; or discharge a shotgun shooting slugs from a highway north of U.S. Highway 30, while deer hunting. “Roadway” means the portion of the highway improved, designed or ordinarily used for vehicular travel, including the shoulder. “Highway” means the entire width between property lines, from fenceline to fenceline (includes the ditches).

99% sure that on ATV's or snowmobiles CWP don't exist, any firearm must be cased & unloaded.
