How many of you guys have taken instruction from a pro? I know a few of you have had lessons from Bud Hall. Unfortunately those who took instruction from him in my area are not too interested in giving me instruction or pointing me in the right direction. I am willing to pay for pro lessons on my line or the instructors if someone knows of someone. I would prefer a student of Bud's but if you have caught big numbers and can proove it I would appriciate the help. If you don't want to talk about it on the open forum pm me. Thanks guys. LLL

My advice is to pay someone 300 bucks to hypnotize you to never intentionally try to catch another mink in your life: Coon and muskrat good; mink bad![/b] Or, rent a U-haul and keep driving until you see more cattails and tile than cottonwood and canyons. Please give the hypnotist my number when your done and tell him I'll give him $400!

I would like to ride with Minnow for a day, I think a guy could pick up a ton of info from him, especially about bottom edge location.

JD if you get the chance, don't pass it up. It was a great day for me. Still amazed by a few things I learned that I never would of on my own. LLL, what type of questions? I'm sure you understand the sets and have a grip on most locations. Must be more on the minks habits and the way they "think"? ~ADC~

A wise older trapper taught me the way to catch mink, it's simple, set the trap where the mink's going to step! See how easy that is? And no I'm not a 100 mink a year trapper! later Ray.

I can tell you one thing.Anyone that knew Bud Hall he was a book of knowledge.I learned a lot on the lesson but the 10 or so visits after the lesson was the big eye opener's.He totally changed my views on trapping and trapline management. And after Ron Hanson and Harold Clark and 2 Craig Ogorman lessons.Your mind is your only limit. And now with TIME not being a problem I can finally put it all together. It is hard anymore to find guys that actually can PROVE the NUMBERS caught.I know several people that have video's and book that are several people catches combined for a total and bought fur. And ones that say they had the NUMBERS but know one can say they actually bought the fur those people. After all said I am totally ready to ROLL.

What is a days worth of mink instruction worth? $300? And the big question would be, how well does it cross over to other things? I mean is it a mind set thing?

I asked Bud to take instructions he asked me my #s and said he couldn't teach me anything I didn't all ready know. Don't know if that was he way of getting around the instruction thing or not. But $300 is chicken feed if you ask me I wouldn't be tellin all for a lousy 300 bucks .

as a young boy and high schooler i learned from a guy that let me trap the same farms he did and i walked by his sets daily and he would catch 60 mink a year and then move down to arizona with his wife til april. this was in NW Iowa in sac county. he was a blind setter, i learned alot from him and by the time i moved away from that area i was good at competing with him, from 110's on bottom edges, to what to look for in blind sets, and told me to put in bait sets to catch the coon and if you wanted a shot at mink in those pocket sets make the pocket about a foot off the ground on a vertical bank and put the trap tight against the base. but on the blind sets, try to anticipate the route of a mink while traveling and then while hunting and look where he will go. places where he would have to slow down a little to enter the water or go around something, forced in places. one of my best mink sets is under grass overhangs where the bank is cut out and only a inch or 2 of water is there. also, anywhere a pipe drain off comes into the creek or pond, those are mink magnets. if i am trapping a creek i put in minimum of 3 sets per stop, 2 on one side and always 1 on another. try to find those places on a creek where looks like a mini draw coming down similar to what a draw looks like in a pasture or field going down hill. those are places where mink blind sets will show up, don't be afraid to modify the spot.
stay away from bait and you will catch more mink and rats and far less coon. I trap all three but anytime i make coon sets, i always throw in a mink set or 2 blind. it is the mink trapper in me. i love catchin em, my best year was over 35 and about 250 rats just blind setting.
check those inside tight turn bends, look where the sloping land hits the waters edge especially on grass overhangs and clumps. also, at bridges set tight up against the bridge where the creek meets the bridge corner, expect coon here too along with several rats.
just some tips i have learned over the years, get jim spencers mink movie and you will really see all the blind set possibilities.

LLL really? Don't you think you should stick with the coon& rats till you get them figured out? To where you can catch one of them at will & stack up some good numberes of them before you move on? Mink are an elusive& intelligent animal do you really think your ready? I'm just saying, think about it! Dennis

Thanks Wayne. If you can find them I will take you up on it. I don't think I would have time to catch numbers but I would like to know how to. My true passion now anyway is pickup loads of coon on a daily bases and I don't need a lot of help there. If anyone else has anything to add to this feel free. There isn't alot else to talk about. I would take the $300 and by a couple mink books, Gerald Schmitt's mink video, and use the rest to buy some 110 conibears and 1 1/2 coils. And then get out a trap!!!

furman, I don't think mink are an intelligent animal, they step in uncovered traps& are so curious that they can't go past a hole, nook or cranny with out checking it out. As for them being elusive, I have a hard time seeing sign from them, all I'v caught have been set blind, no sign, just hoping they are in the area. The whole post was just to stir the pot with Larry. I just met him this spring& consider him a friend. He lets me stop by& drink his coffee& puts up with my dumb questions& ideas, tho if ya stop on the wrong day ya get put to work dipping traps or chunking/ grind bait. Thats ok, I'v learned more tips cutting bait for a day than I"d have learned in 3 years or more by myself! Dennis
