Maybe the sheriffs did know what they were doing in refusing some people from getting a permit "some people" are the key words there Eric. If there weren't sheriffs refusing everyone in their county this whole thing could of been avoided. ~ADC~

People still can't shoot out the window you can't shoot a rifle from the road and you can't shoot from a vehicle thats the law now! They need to leave it the way it is. If you get out of the truck you can shoot a shotgun from the road so im not sure where the people are getting it from that you can shoot out the window cause you can't! If you get out of the truck and into the field then you can shoot a rifle! That would be a bad deal if they made it a law that you cant hunt from your vehicle! If people think they got problems now with coyotes just let that law pass then tell me about the coyote problems! I am a truck hunter and a spot and stalk and calling guy when it come to hunting coyotes but thats all we shoot is coyotes! The truck hunters are the guys who keep the coyotes thined out in alot of areas you take them guys away and your gonna have coyotes like no other!

The question is not using a vehicle for hunting. It is shooting out the window of the vehicle. Surly that is not necessary to be a successful coyote hunter.

The law doesn't cover shotguns out the truck window because now you have a weapons permit that will allow you to shoot from your vehicle at say pheasants in the road ditch because you can shoot a shotgun from the roadway and now can have it loaded and uncased in your vehicle because of your permit. This whole new rule is in response to all those out there that are now doing just that, nothing more, nothing less. You'll still be able to hop out of your truck on private property and do the spray and pray on the coyotes or run them for 10 miles till there almost dead from exhaustion and then shoot them.

What are these supposed "problems" that truck hunters are saving us from in regards to coyotes?

traping24 is right on about those yotys in this open country up here it is awfull hard to spot and stalk a yoty they are to smart for that a fox no problem a yote nope yes we can call them but to get numbers up here and to keep them thinned out we need the trucks they cover to many miles and go for the culverts . the fox are starting to come back here in this area too because of the dog hunters letting them go and i would rather see fox around them those dogs.

I hope it dont take any body 10 miles to run down a coyote! bogio you ask what problems we would have if it was not for the truck hunters here you go i get calls from farmers all the time about coyotes being in people yards killing cat and ect.. When i started hunting my area hard about 5 years ago i was hearing stuff from the farmers all the time about the coyotes up in there cattle and killing cats and dogs now 5 years later we dont have but a few coyotes around no tracks any more and the farmers say they are not seeing coyotes any place even when doing there field work in the fall! The big plus to it is that the fox are coming back strong here in my area cause we have been letting them go and killing all the coyotes! If you take away all the groups like mine that kill around 100 dogs a year then the coyotes will come back as well as the problems! Hope i was able to clear that up for ya! Mange is probably what thinned the coyotes not truck hunters 24. You can't shoot enough to thin them down because they will move right back in. LLL

lll with all the dogs that they get up in this area very few have they got with mange in my area last year along i know of at least 300 dogs that were taken in this area thats just the truck hunters now if you go and take the minnesota hunters that come down and run yotys with there dogs and cover all kinds of area who knows how many they are getting so its not the mange that thinned em out and no you can never get rid of them but we can keep them thinned out enough to help the fox and pheasants population. The only way to do that is with trucks.

Walleyehunter123 is right about that very few up here have mange!
LLL Trapper it is possible to thin the coyotes out in are area cause we have done just that! I cant wait for the fox to be every place around here i would like to do some fox trapping along with some spot and stalking but my group will not kill a fox til they get all over the place like back in the 80's! Are goal is to just keep after them coyotes and keep them thined out like they are now!

go and put a 10$ yote trap out in the open catch a yote then when the yoty hunters come by they shoot your yote and take the trap no place to hide a set to wide open country.

24 doesn't like trap/fur thieves or people messing with sets so I would assume he would keep his group in line.

We don't mow and burn our areas when the birds are nesting.

Thats right no body in my group would ever think of messing with some ones traps or animals and if i ever caught some one doing such things to or with my stuff there would be a price to pay!
Bogio i wish they would do so up here cause they burn and mow all kinds of stuff pretty dumb if you ask me!

24....I will try to explain the reasoning behind what you are complaining about .....fire....you can either burn in the spring or fall, depending on what your trying to accomplish with the burn.....spring burn timed before nesting season gets under way, will stimulate an old growth of grass/forbs, reducing duff, kill off a few of the younger tree's. Downside to spring burn is to early and the thistles show up, to late you burn up nests potentially. Fall burn timed as late as possible but will do some major damage to tree's in your planting if thats what your trying to accomplish, better for a stand if your trying to promote forbs in your planting, downside, eliminates alot of potential winter cover for the birds and reduces amount of hunting area for the public, cuz you just burned it up. So you can see, it is a balancing act that the state and county's have to play, you will never please everyone all the time. Mowing......sometimes yes we do have to mow the area's due to thistles or other noxious weeds that show up, many county's have a weed commissioner that will let us know when complaints are filed against the public area for having to many thistles, so we do mow. We try to keep it at a height that will not chop up the little ones if they are in there.
There is probly alot of things about wildlife management that you have questions about or think you have a better solution to. My suggestion would be to go back to college, get your degree in Wildlife Biology and then come to work for the cause' and then see what happens. With your enthusiasm and life experience's I am sure you will change the world of wildlife management.
Now to get back to the point of the topic.....you are missing it totally.....this new rule is being proposed because of the typical few that ruin it for the majority and if you have to use those type of tactics to harvest a coyote like shooting out of truck or running them down and then shooting them...good for you, but understand that type of activity is what leads to these kinds of rules.
Sorry for the rant, just a little tired and grumpy tonight....lol

In the CR Gazette today- still alive in Senate, prohibit anyone from having a loaded long gun while driving. Don't know what good it will do, doesn't the law already restrict this and isn't it pretty much ignored.

I reread the DNR rules today, I can't see where it's illegal to shoot out/off a car/truck that is off road.
This new proposed law is to prevent road hunting with a shotgun without even parking the car or opening the door. And I doubt it will catch any current legal coyote truck hunters as they can't shoot rifles from ROW now so no change.
Once off the ROW no need for cased or unloaded guns permit or not. But if new law is passed you better get out of the truck before shooting.

With the new weapon permit, doesn't matter what the weapon is, AK, AR, shotgun, or compact 380 I can have every gun I own loaded in my car and the DNR or LEO can't say a thing about it.

I think the new proposal is addressing the issue with new CCW premits that are being obtained for the purpose of driving around hunting with a loaded long gun in a vehicle. I didn't write the proposal and only stated what I read. The fact that they stated long guns indicates to me that they are looking at hunters. Pretty hard to hide a long gun on person if your real intention is for self protection.

Trapper24, when the coyotes are so thinned out, will u pursue the fox with the same diehard attitude until they are also so thinned out. I would rather c the coyote, they offer more of a challenge than a fox. They are also native to Iowa and the US which neither the fox or phesant is.

IMO How can you call it hunting if you have to chase with or shoot for a truck. Hunting from a truck is for the people that are handcap and can not get out and walk. If you have to case with a truck stay home, it's called fair chase for a reason. AGAIN IMO I had an issue 2 years ago on a family farm that others can hunt. I was putting the stock on. 15 min in I hear a truck coming up the hill behind me. The guy had spotted the same dog on the back fence line and was driving out. He was moving fast enough that by the time I got stood up he was going by. He mist me by about 15 feet. I will say this the person is no longer hunting that ground.

trapping24- I doubt that anyone is calling you out because you don't have a wildlife degree. The point that is trying to be made is that fire is a very useful wildlife management tool. Up in your neck of the woods there were prairie pot holes and huge tracts of prairie grass. I am sure that the managers are trying to manage their prairie grass by burning. It is research that proves that this tool is useful, this is nothing new. FYI- the non-indigenous ring neck pheasant will re nest up till the middle of July (something my over priced education taught me). As far as the permit to carry is concerned - who cares, if you got one and people want to carry a loaded firearm while going down the road, let them, I hope car mechanics make more money fixing shot suspensions and crack tranny housings. I pray that no one gets hurt.

Yea idc what any bodys says i know that mowing and burning deal is a real joke! On top of all the mowing and burning they do they go out and cut down all the trees on the state land too! About 10 miles from my house there is a section of state land and in the middle of that section is a great big grove with big old trees with great cover around them well last summer they cut it all down pushed it into a pile now thats dumb come on guys get real! As that CCW law goes its fine the way it is nothing bad has happen since the first of january when the law got passed that i have heard of! They are trying to get it passed so they can try and show their power maybe they should save their time and do somthing worth while!!! DON'T TRY AND FIX SOMTHING THATS NOT BROKE!!! Thats just what they are doing!

Well I was trying to help you out there trapping 24 but I guess you can't fix ignorance. How would you try to manage native grasses and forbes? Grazing? back when we had buffalo that was a good method but if you over graze it then there would be no habitat for your rung neck aliens. If you just leave it it would eventually be taken over by woody vegetation that will turn into timber. Sorry, I am done with this thread.

As far as the cutting of the tree's and such......they harbor predators of ground nesting birds...ie pheasants and ducks. I don't always like to see it either, but the management of the area is for waterfowl and pheasants, thats what is done.
There may be other forces at play on some of these areas to...for instance if it is or was in a farm program and the contract that still may be in place calls for tree removal.....even though the state or county may own the property, we still are under the contract rules of whatever "Farm Program" the area was signed up under. So until the contract expires we have to play by their rules.
