How to measure the jaw spread of a conibear trap has been determined. At the annual meeting of Iowa DNR Officers the following direction was given. The Officers were directed to measure outside to outside of the jaws. The following 280s were too big even if they are measured inside to inside. The Duke 280 BMI 280 Victor 280

Which direction are these measurments to be taken, rivet to rivet wise or along a line parallel to the trigger/dog? Also, when closed or set? Footholds are measured when set so why not bodygrips?
Personally, I think all 280's are too large for setting on land but sure would like to set them in a water situation partially exposed.

Traps are measured in the set position from outside to outside using the jaws on the spring or springs side. T the best I can offer on which ones are legal are none I have measured. I do not have access to all brands but would guess they will ALL be illegal. I also agree with Kelly and would like to be able to use any conibear type trap 1/2 submerged.
