i know this was brought up before but am i right we can legally carry a pistol as long as it isnot concealed like under our jackets or waders. like let s say the hip area . where it can be seen is a legal spot.

I live in Illinois and you are correct as long as you are not in a residental area. The troopers are very cautious but courtious to hunters and trappers. Be safe

While you are hunting or trapping out in the field, you should be fine but DON'T get in a vehicle like that without a concealed carry permit. ~ADC~

This is how i understand it ( IOWA LAW)
Without a concealed weapons permit, You may do whatever you want with the gun while in the feild. BUT for anyone to have a hand gun in a vehicle it must be in a locked case that can not be opened without a key AND the case cant not be within reach your reach.

Dads rolling in his grave again. One day soon the only people who will have guns will be inner city gang members and the police.

you cannot have ammo within 3 ft. of gun or any extraloaded clips, was told could not have in front of box close to windshield in back of pickup, had to be back by tailgate, could have had a sliding rear windshield and reach back in and grab, even though i did not, some officials are real tough on carrying handguns,i understand it is illegal to shoot a rifle in road ditch, but handgun ok.i also understand checking traps with lite in dark and having a gun is considered spotliting

Here in new York, with a concealed carry, you can wear it on your head if you wanna. i wear mine on my hip and its always loaded. but if you get stopped , put both hands out the window and tell him your carrying with permit.

Carrying a firearm is a very serious subject, but I really wonder about some of the advice we're giving, given, was told, heard about, my uncle's friend's buddy's neighbor said........
I'd go see your County Sheriff eye ball to eyeball and take in a list of questions. Even then there are some laws that can be "interpreted". Get his card and I'd note the date and time you met and visited.
This isn't directed at anyone, I'd just be dang sure I understood the laws and "got it straight from the horse's mouth" so to say.

I'd like for some of the law enforcment people here to let us know who is correct. Personally I wouldn't want to carry a handgun without a concealed carry permit for my style of trapping it would be way too big a pain. ~ADC~

In Washington county, the police find any reason to harass you that they can, so most of my friends and I just carry our ax handles and ball bats. If its behind the seat is it considered a concealed weapon? Thats the kind of crap we have to deal with over this way. I like to run my traps from 3:00 am on, so that makes it worse also. The cops seem to really be running the gravels more and more. I have never bought a fire arm for the purpose of shooting a human, so why should I have to explain myself for carrying a .22 varmit killer!

ADC, I feel, felt the same way..........loading, unloading at 75-100+ stops daily.........what a royal PITA!
CC permit would be the best route, but in Iowa, we have 99 different determining factors, which makes little sense to me, grrrrr

Our County Sheriff is "one of the problems " too. Very few CC permits are issued in our county....
When in the field, out of the vehicle, you can carry a firearm any way that's convient but when you're in a vehicle, the UNLOADED firearm goes in a place that is impossible to be reached by the occupants.
Some Officers enforce the loaded/unloaded state of the firearm to the the firearm and clip(s) as well........ Whether that is correct or not, it's HIS call..........
Talking with the Sheriff or Deputy is a good idea.

well i got some info for deleware county! If we want to carry a concealed weapon we have to take a four hour course with and doa shooting trial with designated person. If u pass the course u get the permit. alot of simple questions that we already know just must be reviewed over with occupant. And shooting part they just want to see if u can hit the broad side of the barn. Thats from the sheriff. Our sheriff is a decent guy!

In Iowa you can carry a handgun IN PLAIN VIEW on your person out in the field. Under your coat etc is considered concealed. Jump in your vehicle you are carrying concealed.
Those of you who can just get your concealed carry permit and save yourself any trouble. Don't just get it for trapping get it for personal protection if your sheriff is reasonable, that way you do not have to justify why you are ever carrying your handgun concealed.
Remember no matter what reason you are carrying, all officers react to guns differently. I know an off duty officer who was carrying concealed, but someone in an Ames McDonald's got a glimpse of his gun in his waistband. He was proned out at gunpoint in front of his family by Ames PD until they understood what was going on. I would not have handled it that way, but I wasn't there and everyone has thier own way of doing things. To draw down on people in such a public place is asking for a bad bad shootout. I would have waited for him to leave the store and would have made contact with him in the parking lot away from innocent lives.
I am probably a little too casual about guns, and it might get me killed someday. If I am working a gang banger I am all business and very quick to handle them like bad guys. If I am just making contact with some guy in the field or encounter some guy on a traffic stop who tells me he has a gun in the car I am very low key and generally talk hunting with the guy while I am making sure he is not a felon, etc.

Thanks CI, I'd looked the site over, but not delved too deep. Here are the states that "recognize" Iowa CC permit:
The following states honor Iowa's PCW: Alaska Arizona Idaho Indiana Kentucky Michigan (resident permits only) Missouri Montana Nebraska (must be 21) Oklahoma South Dakota Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont

My dad was stopped and they said even if it was in a case that you could put in your jacket it was illegal. We thought the case was large but take into consideration a jacket a size too large and what you can stuff in it. Since then he got a CC permit. Problem solved.

just remember that a loaded magazine is still considered a loaded weapon so dont forget to unload that before you get into your vehicle.

I would encourage you to talk with one of the following to help find your answer: Your County Sheriff, A Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor, or the IA DNR (CO).
Otherwise you can check the following Iowa Code sections for guidance: 724.4(3)(e) 724.4(3)(f) 724.4(3)(g) 483A.36
You should be able to find the above code sections on the net...
Good Luck
