Well the BOD meeting was very interesting. This meeting was well attended by the Directors.
Congrats to Minnow who is now a Director at large. The Board got to choose between three worthy candidates, and Minnow won. I know he will serve us well.
Of course prestaking was the hot topic. Several trappers spoke on the issue, and most of the Directors sounded off on the issue.
All trappers who spoke were pro pre staking. I was dissapointed that NO trappers showed up to oppose prestaking as I feel all issues should be represented from both sides.
I also feel that the lack of people there against prestaking is revealing in a way, as to how strong the feelings are in those whom have complained.
The Directors who spoke out against prestaking did so for two main reasons. Some did so because a majority of thier trappers in their Districts who were polled were opposed to prestaking. I can respect that stand, as it is an honorable one.
The other few who spoke out against it shared scenarios with us that they had gotten from trappers in thier area which were purely trapper pissing matches that need to be handled among trappers. Minnow, Red OHearn, and several others brought up the very valid point that these types will complain no matter what you do for them, it is in thier nature to complain to someone and expect someone to change things for them. I agree. Whether a hard roller starts two weeks ahead prestaking, or starts at 8 am these types are still going to complain about that trapper taking "thier coon"
I asked Ron about prestaking and its comparison to tree stands being put out on state ground in advance of the season, and look out bow hunters because they are coming after you the way it sounds.
The issue of fairness came up a lot. This is a worthwhile issue to discuss, but the fact is you cannot make the world completely fair. There will always be complainers. We focus on two trappers trying to trap the same ditch and the resulting pissing matches, and the fact is two pheasant hunters trying to hunt the same state ground get into the same pissing matches. A DNR officer should be telling them to grow up and work it out, and should not be the fairness referee.
An interesting development happened in which Cody Hutton pointed out the last 10 to 9 vote on prestaking was null and void due to a 2005 vote taken by the Board, and another vote was taken. Some discussion occurred regarding proper procedure that was a bit over most of our heads. Anyway a clear majority of Directors voted that ITA should support prestaking two weeks ahead of season, and the rest abstained from voting.
Probably all moot as it sounds as though DNR is going forward anyway.
All that aside, even though we disagree on this issue I think Ron Andrews always has been, and is still a friend to trapping.
I think we need to get behind the turtle trappers, as this anti group seems to be testing the political waters in Iowa, and we will be next if they decide the water feels good. More later.
