i am new on here and saw the topic of mink snaring in the archives and wanted to run this idea at you all. I have thought about how nice it would be to try snaring mink and after reading the information from you all i think that the main thing to focus on is the 2.5 inch loop made by the deer stop. Why dont we try and get mink snares by using this standard. if the loop cannot OPEN beyond 2.5 inches how can a deer possibly be in danger of being leg snared. make any sense???

I'm thinking that type of rewording the law would require the law bieng open to other amendments as well, which may or may not be in our favor. Perhaps Gene would have a better idea on that.

Maybe a 2 1/2 inch loop would work for weasels but a good buck minks head is much larger than that. Have a good one just

Yeap its one tool that would be nice to use. I see lots of places a mink snare would be perfict to use (even under water). As it is now it is not even a good idea to bring the mink snare up ( or change the code). It could open more changes to other trapping rules to change. Really we have a state with some very good codes on trapping.

I would love to snare mink as well but as minnow and others have stated that would require opening up the code and than we could see changes in a lot more areas than snaring mink and could get ugly.

Snares set under-water, or under the ice shouldn't be required to have deer stops. Yes, I know they are in Iowa but that is nutty. I can place small-game snares stabilized to stakes so fast in under-water runs(way faster than coni-bears) and carry way more pre-rigged on an a sled, but not in Iowa. This may be a way to get away from deer stops on all snares and a switch to BADs by pointing out that deer don't travel under water.

I guess the big question I have in all of this is, just what qualifies to be changed by administrative rule, and what has to have the code opened up to be changed? If a regulation is going to be more restictive it can be implemented by administative rule, and if it is less restictive or makes changes to any rule whether it was put in place by a code change or administrative rule, it has to be done by opening The Code. Do I have this about right or am I missing something? If I'm right, it doesn't seem fair. HELP Gene???!! Scott

I agree with what has been said by others. This could easily be like climbing up a steep, icy creek bank. It would be nice to take the short way up and out, but attempting to take one small step forward can result in sliding into the creek and wet feet.
