What are we supposed to do with incidentals that become caught in our beaver sets, like muskrats? I know that otter need to be turned in but does everything else?

Good question Kelly. What exactlly is the law in reguards to this? I'm thinking just tossing them and keeping your mouth shut is the best option. If it becomes work for the DNR who knows what kind of things could bring about. ~ADC~

I can't find anything in the rules booklet other than for otter and bobcats.

Pitch them over your shoulder and let Mother Nature profit from your catch.
I guess I never heard of a law that says that you have to turn in dead otter or bobcat just can’t keep them after the limit has been made. I never turned all the dead otter that I caught and I told our DNR that and he told me that they would like to have the dead otter to keep track of incidentals but he never said that I have to.

In quite a few other states they address incidentals that are caught while beaver trapping when mink/rats season is closed they are allowed to keep them if they were caught while beaver trapping. They do have some trap size minimums so that one isn't out there trapping beaver with 1.5 longsprings. Just can't see throwing something away.

Not allowed in Iowa. We (ITA) tried to get it changed but were unsuccessful. Sure a shame to discard good fur especially rats when they are at their best.

Try your best to avoid the incidentals with higher pan tensions, triggers moved to the side on 330's and snares where you can put them. Then S.S.S. (shoot shovel shutup). Well. don't shoot! but you get my drift. Scott

I think if the non-target animal has already expired there is not much one can do. Maybe carry away from sets and stash in the weeds. Good question though. Maybe call DNR and ask if situation happens what to do for rats, mink, ect.
Kelly, Ed Kocal is easy going and will give you a straight answer.
Just my thoughts.

Throwing away would fall under "wanton waste" right? Probably get a fine for that.
