Been away for the past few weeks doing some late season trapping........so I'm trying to catch up a bit.
Do I understand this correctly...."we as trappers" are suggesting giving up rights to pre staking on public ground?
Please tell me what in the world this has caused this issue? What's the problem with prestaking?
Coontrappernick, took the word right out of my mouth........why would we do this, support this, suggest this?

Some trappers are leaving kill poles out year round. There are allegations that gear is getting caught up in mowers etc during the off season.
Some trappers have complained about prestaking also.
Some fear if we do not control pre staking we will lose right of way trapping altogether someday.
I have yet to see any facts, as far as how many complaints, etc. Some of us wil be attending the ITA Board meeting in April. Several of us have challenged the decision and asserted an ITA by law which allows a challenge procedure.
I am all for pre staking, but in a reasonable way. I think leaving kill poles out year around is just ridiculous. However I assert that we trappers can take a stand and remove the gear ourselves if our peers are stupid enough to leave it out.
This is only right of way issues, and will not apply to private property.

Some trappers are leaving kill poles out year round. There are allegations that gear is getting caught up in mowers etc during the off season. Makes sense.
Some trappers have complained about prestaking also. What's to complain about.....it's public ground.....so some hussel, are more organized than others....so we need to change the LAW for this?
Some fear if we do not control pre staking we will lose right of way trapping altogether someday. IMHO, there's a huge difference in "regulating prestaking VS giving up everything.....30-60days before season vs NONE............?

Several of us have challenged the decision and asserted an ITA by law which allows a challenge procedure. It would be interesting to see formal complaints, and valid mower problems vs perceived problems

? are there many trappers complaining or just a few? Percentage of trappers opposed to pre staking?

Thats a good question as far as trapper complaints. I have yet to see any hard data and am assuming that if we took the number of complaints, and compared them to the number of guys who are prestaking a lot and getting along just fine with no complaints that the get along guys are in a great majority.
On the subject of complaints also, I would like to know how many actual complaints have taken place VS just inquiry as to wether or not prestaking is legal. Big difference between a question and a complaint.
My solution is to give the trappers a year or so to police ourselves and revisit the issue. Another question I have is, when a Director gets an inquiry are they doing a little PR for us, or are they down talking prestaking to the person doing the inquiry? You can evolve an inquiry into a complaint pretty easy if you already do not like prestaking. I think that this could happen at times, probably not the norm though.
When I get a little free time I will be contacting Ron Andrews to see if he has any hard data. If anyone else gets ahold of him sooner let me know.

In your comments about regulating prestaking, it seems to be an "all or nothing" kind of thing. If you get the time there are some extensive threads about this on here, but it would seem that this is a dry land snare issue, and I have yet to find any one wiht complaints about water trappers prestaking.
