I see alot of people targeting coon on here, but have not seen too much for fox action. Do most wait until later in the season to target Mr. Fox waiting for better fur? Or are they not out there in great numbers?

IMO if a person were to target red fox and work hard, hey would still have a hard time catching 50 in a season in most areas of the state. Be even tougher to get that many greys.

I would agree Jayme. We are just catching a few not like 20 years ago when they were more abundant.

If you want to trap fox get rid of the coyotes. The foxes I do see are denning up close to farms. My neighbor down the road had a fox den in his machine shed. I have a fox den about 20 to 30 yards from my back yard. I love to trap coyotes, but I leave the foxes alone.

The fox population is patchy. Small areas here and there will have fox but no great number of them.

They have been driving the fox out of areas for close to 20 years now. With numbers dwindling, we have shifted most of our attention to other species.

There are lots of fox around. You just have to know where. (hint: they like cats)

I typically get 6 or so a year on accident, get them in snares set for coon or dirt holes for coyotes. Had a beautiful mature one today, right as i got to him, he got free of the snare and all I could do was watch him run at mach 12 across the field and break out my little score card.
Fox 1 Me 0
I'm happy if I catch one a year, personally. I don't target them but they are around. Target the coyotes and it will help the fox population.

Hope this doesnt piss anyone off trapping the area but When I was in College at ISU the last couple years south of Boone, IA down by the River on both sides of HWY 30 I was catching a Red Fox about once a week in December and January. Seemed like I took a lot of them out of there.
