they say 6 inches back from your pocket and 3 inches left or right of it to get a hind foot catch which is really what you want because your taking away there pulling power.

I put mine up close to try and catch mink and rats also.

Like trappinia, I usually place my trap pretty tight to the pocket for the same reason. But what is more important to me than depth or position is to dig the pocket at least 8" deep, burry the trap chain and drowning wire in the mud and bed the trap fairly solid so it won't tip or wobble if an animal steps on a jaw or lever. Often this requires importing some mud or bank dirt to make a suitable trap bed which takes time. But resetting empty, tripped traps takes even more time. Nothing wrong with using a few guide sticks to show the animal where you want him to step, either. Good luck curtcolin!

I think it kind of depends on how you dig your pocket. I like to dig mine just a little bit wider than normal and i put the trap right in front of the pocket

Dig my pockets as deep as the location allows and as wide as the trap. I set the loose jaw just inside the pocket. If the pocket is wider than the pocket I will put a stick in the mud to force mink over the trap. My coon trapping partner sets his so the dog is at the 2 o'clock position. We both catch coon, mink and rats. Like 4fur said bedding the trap is just as important in water trapping as it is in dirt trapping.

I poke the pocket hole about 8" deep and set the trap close to the hole like 4fur and tarpinia said I catch coons, rats and mink in them and have set this way for 20 years. It works. I set the dog at 11:00 from the hole

I always set for a back leg catch for coon but if I have a mink to kill the trap goes as far in the pocket as I can and the jaws are against the walls of the pocket. You want a rat or mink to step through the jaws not over the jaw. Same way with coon or beaver. LLL
