With everyone using different things for coon bait like fish food pellets, sweet feed etc.... Does anyone use fish meal? Maybe I'm the only one but you might be suprised at how well fish meal works all by itself in bucket sets late season! Doesn't freeze, no mess and cheap! I also use it for a base for a paste bait I make. Just never really hear many people talking about it or did I just let the cat out of the bag lol?

I get mine at the local feed store. I never hear people talk about it and didn't know if many use it or not but I have been using it for years with great results

Many of the trappers here use fish meal. It is an excellent addition to most baits. The biggest issue seems to be finding a the product. It is available at most animal feed stores, usually in bag.

yea I get it in bag form at the feed store. I hear everyone talking about fish food pellets (which I use also) but never hear much about fish meal.

IMO there are many products that are better than fish food pellets. Besides not all pellets are made equal.
What do you mix fish meal with? Just about anything you want. Have never added to fish has always been a dry or semi dry bait.

LOL Love the pic! Don't mean to laugh but I though I was the only one that was smart enough to leave a bag in the truck and come back to a mess I gues the pic proves how much the coon love it!

First I'm silly and now I am being laughed at...been a rough week on ITT ! Fortunately I had picked up the meal on the way home from a convention and had just washed and cleaned out the back of my truck. So I recovered nearly all the meal and put it in a big Rubbermaid tote. I did remember to take the Coon Crunch inside that night though. Another bait testimonial (liquid feed grade molasses). Those are bite holes on the right side of the jug..

Is fish meal better late season or do you use it all season? Would you recommend mixing with something (like corn)or does making a paste out of it work better? If anyone in se iowa needs some, we sell it and the jugs of molasses at the mill I work at. Also, if there is some combos of feed ingredients someone wants me to try , I'll mix something together and give it a try (a perk of working at a feed mill I guess).

I've used fish meal for quite a while. Prefer it over liquid fish products as I can contain it better. i.e.: don't end up wearing it on me or my clothing. I've added it to predator paste baits, made a paste with molasses/honey/syrup or just used it by itself. Carry the fish meal in a peanut butter jar and scatter around buckets or D/Ps. Same with dried/powdered molasses. Scattered around a dryland set or along a trail, I believe it works like a trailing scent. Animals that visit, but do not work a set for whatever reason get it on their feet and carry it away with them creating the scent trail back to my sets. If nothing else it can create a milling affect causing an animal to spend just a little more time at a set area.

What's the difference between liquid feed grade molasses and the molasses you by at the grocery store?

Gene is right. But Brer Rabbit brand will probably work just fine for FPF, Arcman. I tried maple syrup, too.
If you are going past Mo. Valley, I have extra of the feed grade stuff if you want to try some without buying 5 gallons.

As Demoman states, the pellet fish food varies quite abit. I bought several different brands and found out the more spendy ones smelled more fishy....and that correlated with the percentage of fish meal in the product. So of course I went out and bought a bag of fish meal (yes, it can be hard to find).

I just called my feed store in town, they have it in powder form, I had them order some liquid feed grade, I always used the stuff from the store, but if its better, I will use it, thanks
