Hi everyone,
I just wanted to ask everyone for their advice on trapping sileage pit coons. I picked up a new property this year and setting around the pit is a new thing for me. I have DP's and a couple cage traps. Any and all advice welcomed.
Thank you,
Mobrt

Should be a trail going to the pit. Set on the trail.

Anytime you are close to a cattle or livestock operation prepare for rodents stealing bait. You may be on a really good spot there by the way.

Often there is too much farm equipment traffic right by the pit itself. So I try to figure out where the coon are getting a drink and also where the coon are living.

I set sileage pits late in the year when the weather was cold and the food was scarce. Set heavy. I set on the backside of the pit where the farmer wouldn't scoop up my trap. Dp's was my choice.

I had really bad luck trapping sillage pits. had to avoid cats at all costs. Coon wouldn't go for sweet bait either. I ended up setting snares in the trails leading to the pit. Caught three coon first night.
Has anyone ever caught a cat in a snare? I have not, I believe my deerstop allows them out, just wondering if i'm safe setting them around the farms with cats?

I've caught a lot of cats in snares, as I'm sure their are a lot of others on here that have as well. Deer stops will not stop cat catches. If I'm somewhere that they don't want the cats harmed, I have a pair of welder gloves to remove the cats from the snares. I don't care if it's grandma's lap kitty, a snared cat is a scared, scratching, biting, writhing mountain lion when your trying to release them.

Surprised I haven't got one yet. I set out 50 to 100 snares every year. I have a thick blanket I use to release from leg holds. I like the welder gloves idea though. Thanks

I also seem to catch a lot of skunk around sillage pits. My farmers don't seem to mind cause i set far enough away but if i was a farmer that had to go scoop sillage in the morning and there were two skunks right where i needed to load I wouldn't be happy.

use whole kernel corn for bait in your dps mixed with cherry oil, no cats, not much for skunks and you will catch coons...they are comin there for a corn base food anyway
