hey...where did you get the cable? I would get the snare builder pack from snareshop.com if you want to build them yourself...it comes with a sample snare already put together to model after....good job trying but the cable you are using is too kinked up to do the job effectively...

I bought a builder kit from the snare shop years ago with everything I needed. Be sure to tell them you need the deer stops. Good place to start, you can build a few and use them. Then you can fine tune your snares to fit your style of trapping after you have taken a few animals. I believe my kit was 5 foot with small washer locks. I have since tried different locks and lengths of cable for different situations.

They sell the kits with and without a driver, what is the driver and what is it for?

I believe at Dakotaline the driver would be a wire driver to drive support wire into the ground. It will depend on how you want to support your snare if you want that piece of equipment or not.

Snares are only good for one catch. After you catch a critter you throw away the snare (save some of the reusable parts but the cable and stops are garbage). So if you have 30 locations and you catch three coons in each one you'll about be out of snares. If you are just starting out, and not sure you will like snaring, I'd just say buy a dozen or two pre-made and try them before you commit to building them. You can save some of the parts on them and only need to buy cable and stops to rebuild them.

If you are just getting started I would like to help out. If you get me your address I will send you some already built snares and get you started out correctly. A snare can be a dangerous tool so be careful where you are setting them. I also have many magazines, books and videos you are welcome to look at if you are willing to.
The FTA yearly get together is the 25th of this month in Central City Iowa if you could attend it will be helpful to you. If you don't drive maybe we can hitch you a ride with someone or I can come get you.

hey rookie...where are you from? if you are near central iowa would be happy to show you what we are talking about...also...the fta central city would be a good place to learn as well at funke's on august 18 at state center iowa at the open house there..and I would be a fool not to mention the Iowa Trappers Association convention coming up September 6 and 7th at britt, ia which is just west of clear lake, ia. I hardly ever get much sleep there but I always come out a lot smarter than when I came in and it don't take much lol.

www.dakotalinesnares.com/store/Go to the above link & click on free video's box in lower left area on screen...Mark shows how to set a snare...should give you a better understanding of how support collars & support wires are used. Some snares have a small rubber tubing for support wire...metal support collars for 9 or 11 guage wire sometimes are also used. Is important the support wire you use matches the size wire intended for the support collar you have on the snares you purchased. If you let us know what snares you purchased others may be able to give you more insight on their use & the proper support wire you will need to be using.
