Me and a buddy are thinking about trapping from a boat on the river this year and were wondering what kind of sets, baits, locations, and strategies would be the most effective for the water animals we will be targeting. Any help will be awesome. Thanks!

What river? Check for exposed bait laws.

I've only done it for a few years, but trapping a river is a whole new ball game.

Scout the area about a week before season make notes of sign and locations and pray for good weather.

Make sure you are on a navigable river and follow the rules or have permission from the landowner whose land you set traps on.

We will be on the skunk and have an airboat to trap out of so we shouldnt have to worry about any low water.

if on the south skunk I know you have to have permission from each side of the river from whoever owns it in order to place your equipment on that side. you can float down that river all day but as soon as you place equipment on it, you are required by law to have permission from the landowner to do so. I should know, I trap some on the skunk river and have permission there

You are right Josh the Skunk is not one of the navigable waterways in Iowa.

if you go to the Iowa DNR website and search for Meandering stream it will explain and give maps.

There is a big difference between navigable and meandered and meandering, when it comes to what we are talking about as far as river usage goes in Iowa. Dave's link to the map will be very useful.
