I plan on finishing my own fur this year. Was wondering what size beam you guys recommend coons? 6" or 8" wide? Thanks

I made mine from a 2x6. It works fine for most skins. You need a smaller one for skins like muskrat and mink.

I've used a 6" one since 1981. Last year I made an 8" one for coon and beaver and really like it.

What are you gonna be fleshing? I just took a wood coon stretcher measured it and made mine that wide. just

How do you shape the 2x6 and is there a pattern for the "pointy end"?

Use a wood stretcher for a pattern or go to NAFA website and download one of their stretcher patterns. just

I will be fleshing mainly coon and beaver. I think I'll go with an 8" and get a smaller one to mount on work bench for mink and rats.
Thanks

Thats what I did. Made the mink beam with a 2X4. A couple of door hinges and the height is adjustable. Mink beam C clamps onto a table. best of luck just

I've read (or heard, can't remember which) that the beam should have the same contour as the fleshing knife you're using, is this true?

Having the beam and knife curve the same will get you a larger working area. Old beams are neat to look at, as they are worn down by the user. Each one fits the users stance and how he works the fur on the beam.

Now.. What size beam do you guys prefer for mink and muskrats. Would just a mink board work ok?
