I am freakin! The winter ITA directors meeting will be Feb.3 in Ames. This will really belittle any complaints about the bobcat and otter seasons, huh? Probably be a good idea to write or call your director with any concerns you have. The thing is, I hadn't seen our guy on the line and I think I heard his name mentioned in the obituaries on the radio yesterday! He is in his 70's but I bet he had a heart attack when he heard the news! Yeah, I'm freakin!

All I know is that it would end the way I do things now if I couldn't run the ditches. About 90% of what I do is in the ditches. I can't see what their logic for it would be? Yeah I know, some ladys cat got killed, but she takes that chance every time she lets that animal out, if she chooses to let it roam free. Is the state going to start shutting down roads everytime someones cat gets run over. This just doesn't make sense.

Perhaps you could summarize it for those of us who don't get the Trapper/Predator Caller. I'm a member of the ITA, I just opted out on receiving the Magazine. Thanks

I read and reread Spencer's report and all it says is "I know this has gotten the attention of out legislators. There is already talk that there could be legislation about roadside trapping coming in the next session." Then goes on to say a lobbyist was hired to "watch out for our interests".
I'd like to know what the "this" in his first sentence is referring to and what type of "legislation" or regulations they are proposing.

I Read the DM Reg. article. I think the reporter should report what has happened in the states that banned traps, etc. The lady who had her cat in a trap was in essence talking out of both sides of her mouth not really wanting to offend but really did. She also wants her cats in at night so the yote don't get them, well lady you should see what would happen if you don't help control their population. Cats not staying within the confines of a home should not be allowed in a home after being outside getting in to who knows what and eating who knows what( couple things they kill are quail & pheasants) and then bringing the germs or other yucky things in to the very house your kids and grandkids live and play in.. I have only caught one domestic cat and two dogs in my years. Dogs were fine and wouldn't quit following me on my trap line but the cat, way different story. I said right then, if a cat is in my trap again out in the back 40, it's going to wherever cats go when they quit breathing. I would just as soon take a Bobcat out as a domestic house cat that is living on game birds and song birds. Maybe it's because one is like a uniformed enemy and the other is like a black jamie'd VC with a bomb up his sleeve.

So is someone in the Senate or house leading the charge on this, or is there just potential for legislation?

I'm going to try to get a hold of my rep this weekend and see if he knows anything about it. As far as low coon populations, I thought they were a little low in 06 and I found a lot of dead ones, but this year they seemed to have rebounded real well. I had no shortage of coon in my area. Maybe they should put a hold on the non residents for a couple of years, if they want to take the pressure off the populations.

Are we even sure this issue exists yet?
Got news for them. They better not approach farming groups complaining about low coon populations. Pretty sure Fram Bureau types will smack that down hard.
Sorry Horn I was in a training meeting when you called. New computers at work.

Figured that was the deal, I felt bad about interrupting. I was on the way home and was taking advantage of the otherwise dead time ( hands free cell phone of course).

I'll talk to Dave Tjepke this weekend and see whats up. These politicians need to see the truth and what really happens on a line before they make a desicion. This will drastically change the way alot of us trap, but cats will still get caught, (just not in the ditches) because people refuse to keep their pets on their property. I have an acreage and I keep a few cats for rodent control in the barn and sheds, but when one gets hit by a car or comes up missing. Well it's not the persons fault that hit it or traps it or shoots it for being on their property or whatever else might befall the cat

Exactly Rob, we have cats on our farm place, not tied up, free roaming. Yes, they got smoked on the road occasionally, but that comes with the territory, it's whats expected.

I'll do that Paul, Judy is a good friend of my wifes. Yes you are right Dave is a good man. By the way my youngest son has been riding with the troopers for years now, he will complete college this May. He has a good rep with the troopers here and they want to get him into the patrol, there is some vacancies. He put in his application and is hoping to get into the fall academy. Having Dave pulling for him should help also.
