some times it's just nice to set back and watch the animal you are trapping and what they do. I sat and watched these two beaver for about 15- 20 mins. They where feeding on shelf ice, diving to get stored sticks which was a shock to me I tought they would go for fresh sticks short vid clip

maybe the water "marinates" the stored sticks and they taste better or they just didn't want to get their feet frozen in the snow

was planning on starting out this weekend with some and more next wkend, but awful cold out yet, some places froze up. should be able to get few out sat. but might not turn out to be much, maybe get warmer in a week. i would think castor mound trapping would work much better with lure in warmer nights?

set out 4 yesterday. banks all frozen and water really running, streams all still way up.planning waiting till next wkend to set more, not sure if going to be any good, 1 weather station predicts in low single digits for 3 nites this week and in mid teens for lows next wkend. and only 3 wks. left next wkend, end of march is already getting late

high fast water and frozen bank just make you think/look a little bit but I'm still out putting beaver in my truck Yogi, flood stage water and above plus frozen banks should be par. Usually to start I have to use alot of rebar for conibear stabilizers. Around here if wait for the river to recede I'm too late.

High water is one thing, but I don't like climbing around on frozen banks any more than a beaver does. I have seen a little fresh sign around though ;D

just got big female under ice and 2 more over wkend, only set 4 out sat and now down to 2. was called back to work and then high water. should set more sat. but thought would be better weather coming this week. not sure now. sounds like freeze creeks good with single digits and possibly not open up enough this wkend with warmer but not real warm weather and then possibly more snow sunday. got my first ever on snare on drowning rod sunday

Having a hard time getting the motivation to trap this spring. With NAFA last receiving date coming soon, I don't like the idea of saving pelts till fall. Id hit it hard if anyone knows of a buyer in NW Iowa. Kabeles buying till season end??

I hear Bruce Hutton will be there and buy a few beavers.

I'll probably sell to mike in spirit lake if I do. Proms and rodeos every weekend of April. Price isn't that big of deal. Bounty money here

My question to you spring beaver trappers. Why don't some of these mallards land on these beaver ponds in the fall? Scared over 100 off of one dam the last three days in a row.

My guess is they're heading south long after the small ponds have froze solid. The last couple of years all of the big mallards we've shot have been the last week or so of the season.

when using foot holds and long chains on beaver there's one thing better then just a rear foot catch and thats a rear leg wrapped in chain foot catch.

Anybody still after them? Are they all bit up, or is it worth it to set a small line next week?
Thanks, Ben

Sorry to hear that Cody. We were down by Cherokee last weekend and the creeks seemed to be running better than up here. How long will you be laid up?
