I've test fired a TS 85 on a dead beaver's front foot and broke the leg. That says to me there is plenty of power there. (I believe the same could happen with the 750's too.) I don't try for front foot catches, but they happen. I will not 4 coil my 85's. However, I am experimenting with welded teeth on a few. I piddled around with lighter pan tension last year. Never again! 4-5# for sure. hvtrapper is right, don't let them get to the bottom where they can get something to use their power to push off from. A swimming animal has relatively little power. There are a lot of trappers on here that have caught a ton more beaver than me in smaller traps, but for me, bigger is better.

750 would be my choice hands down. Its much more fool proof for a beginner. You must set the TS85 correctly in deep enough water to not get tripped/empty traps. The MB750 seems to work about anywhere you set it for them. I'm sticking with what I said. We used 4+ pounds of pan tension on all the foothold beaver traps we used and had several tripped and empty 85's, some at the bottom of the drowners, some 1/2 way down the rods, and several right in their beds and never moved. I'm sure it must be the trappers fault if some of these guys can make them work every time but there is way larger learning curve to make them work for a beginner. I can guarantee even if it was not intentional the TS85 wouldn't of held this beaver... ~ADC~

I have caught 91 beaver this year and have not had any broken legs, but I could see it happenig at some point. I have had them wring off the front foot 4 times this year at the wrist where its weak. When they are caught by front foot the trap fires 3-4" up their front leg. The 4 coiled traps bite in to the meat and hold where as the ts85s like to slide down to the front joint where it is the weakest. I like to catch them by the back foot, but I had 2 beaver caught by front foot that were set 10 to 14" of water. I have got 12 to 18 ts85s I would trade for any of them mb750s.

The last beaver I "footed" was several years ago with a #5 Bridger LS. One spring caught on a stob in the dam and all swiveling was lost. I tried to post a photo earlier but I couldn't figure out how to reduce it enough to post directly from my computer file.

I'm looking forward to hearing your results with the SC #5s. I have yet to use them.

I am a trapper, not a wildlife biologist. But I have read that beaver can live 20 or even 25 years. And the expression, "Memory like an elephant" was coined by someone who was not familiar with beaver! LOL
Of course you realize you have some problems, iawalleye, and are trying to find some solutions. 10-30% misses and wring-offs approaching 5% are truly bizarre statistics. Those beaver alone are going to cause a lot of head aches for you and other trappers for years to come.
