Brett H and I had some fun.
Didn't even set any traps.
Just used fly bait under the bridges!
Can't beat 'em, might as well join 'em!

You don't use fly bait for Beaver, you use poplar soaked in strychnine.

That explains all the empty fly bait cans I have been finding under bridges.

Of course you are just kidding, but I don't think you could even sell poisoned coon. Most of the farmers market sweetcorn guys have used it around here and I've seen it in action, albeit during the summer. The dead coon have discharge coming out both ends and their fur is matted down. And they stink like the poison is coming out their pores! I think a buyer could pick a poisoned one out of a pile.
btw, the stuff is effective with some having their face still in the hog pan. Also is effective on two dogs and numerous cats around these gardens. And I still get calls because some coon just will always avoid the stuff.

Does anyone ever think that as many threads and talk about fly dope has not had an increased effect of it. This kind of thread does more harm than good IMHO. LLL

Doubt it Larry. Not many farmers or rural home owners on this site. Jayme makes sure you have to be a trapper to be here.
You have the local feed/hardware store to thank for spreading the word. I know of over 2 doz framers in this county alone that use it and trust me, they didn't get there info here.
If anything talking about it increases awareness of the problem in hopes something is finally done about this ILLEGAL activity.

Local lumber yard can not keep the fly bait in question in stock. It goes out the door faster than it comes in. Yes I have areas on my line that are DEAD and I know it is the reson because I see the piles of coon and they always brag about how "it protects" their sweet corn patch. One farm that used to be good for 15-20 coon now has none.
Is it the cause of a state wide decline in coon. I do not think it has a huge affect on the state level, but sure can hurt you locally. Don't take too may stops of 0 to lower the catch. Most farmers also have live traps set 365 days a year.

If it effects enough guys "locally", it than becomes a state wide issue.

Brett H, It was nice to meet you to. Our week went pretty good, catch started to slow down on the 4th check but still managed to put up some decent numbers. Pretty new to road trapping/ long lining, mostly just trapped private ground in the past but it has been fun trapping different areas on the road line. Congrats again on the catch, thats a hell of a run!
