Yesterday was my first day ever setting coon traps and I guess I should have set more than 4 at this spot! Z-Traps baited with ADC's trail mix I picked up at Central City and I had squirted some old cooking oil around them. So question time.... I dispatched the coons today with the 22 and it led to me spending more time getting them cleaned up than it did to set/check. Are there better ways to dispatch to aviod this? And just how 'cleaned up' do they need to be if you are selling in the round or skinned? Thanks!

BTF (blunt force trauma) to the back of the head works great, no blood, baseball bat works

Blood on the traps usually doesn't bother coon, I just reset and re bait and I'm on my way.

Great picture, Buck! I hate blood, too... I've started using this method since I saw you doing it on here last year! I kinda like it

[quote author=jbruegge board=general thread=11861 post=72638 time=1352143169 I've started using this method since I saw you doing it on here last year! I kinda like it [/quote] It isn't 100% is it? If you perfect the technique, JB, let me know! I had 3 out of 20 this morning that didn't die when I carried them back to the truck so I fed them a shell. When it works, it's sure a great way to put them down though...

Either force feeding shells, or hit 'em again. This one caught the 330 too far down on his body, and didn't really like that, so I doubled up with a 220 to finish it.

Why does that coon remind me of Mr. T?

OK, dispatching with a Belisle 330 is not an exact science but I'm getting better. Notice the one I hit across the forehead this morning? He went down in less than 30 seconds!

I tried the coni method this morning. A lot cleaner than the 22! I used 220s but will be switching to 330s.

Due to a lot of 330s catching the coons too deep on the body, I have switched to 220s and its been working a lot smoother for me! I've used the 330s on a select few of the biggest coons (and beavers, which they seem to put down VERY nicely). I wonder about using 280s...

I've tried both the 280 and 220 but I like the reach and larger target area of a 330. Trigger on bottom jaw closest to the coon. Triggers slightly protruding toward the coon. Don't center the trap on the coon, but hit them with the lower jaw just under their chin. Just got some fish sticks out yesterday and forgot how well a 330 dispatch works in the water. Just stand on a jaw or spring with their head under water while remaking the set and they go down fast. Nice handle to carry them back to the truck, too. Beaver go down fast but badger are the quickest!
