I was reading fish fur and game this weekend and came across a man who used plastic crawl lure like what u use for bass fishing, and used it for trapping. He took the lure and fastened it the pan if the double coil spring and said he caught mink and coon. I was wondering if it is a good idea, and has anyone tryed it?

It may catch a very few critters if you got real lucky. Its prone to catch birds though. IMO I'd use a PVC set or a pocket set or a smear type set with those foot holds. They will be more productive for you for certain. I or someone else would gladly explain any of those sets and a number of others that would be a better option for your foot hold traps if you're not familiar with them. Just ask. Good luck to you.

The old bait on the pan thing works, under a full moon. As was stated there are better tricks to have in your bag.
I would guess that percentage wise you could kick a pocket in with your foot and catch three times what you would with the bait on the pan thing.

Basically just smearing some bait on something guarded by the trap. Can be a rock, stick, bridge pillar, or anything, even just the creek bank. You can easily make a poke set similar too by making a couple holes in the bank with your finger or trap stake and poking some bait into them as well. You said you know of the PVC sets but there are two variations I use. One is just a pipe stuck in the bank leaning over the water with a trap under it, but the second uses an elbow on the pipe and you don't need a bank for it. Just set your trap below the elbow and fill the top of the pipe with bait. It can be used anywhere there is water. Here's a picture showing the set and results. There were 6 sets there the two you see still standing didn't make a catch that day... ~ADC~

Where are you from Fox? Maybe there is someone in your area that can be more specific on what may work for you. ~ADC~

Rumor has it I may be able to get a little water trapping done this year. The creeks came up a ways with this last rain and more rain scheduled for tomorrow! I just need to get a few more coils ready with the double jaw in.

so a pvc set is just a pvc pipe with an elbow and you put bait in it and then yout trap by the elbow what keeps the coons from coming in on the back side do you have a close up picture of the pvc peice

The coons do come in from the back I'm sure at times but they have to come around to the other side to get the bait out. It's just a 12-20" long piece of PVC with a 90 degree elbow on the end. I use 1/2" PVC usually any size will work. ~ADC~

Hey does anyone know what to use for bait for pocket sets. I heard some people using rabbit meat for coon and mink.

Everyone I know uses fish (usually chunked carp) or muskrat carsasses mostly in their pocket sets. I'd guess fish 90+% of the time is the bait in them.

how is the pvc pipe atatched to the trap or at all. if not atatched to the trap how do you keep the pvc pipe from floating away.

Just stake the trap out in fron t of the elbow of the pvc pipe. You stick the pvc pipe in the bottom of the water, it won't float away.

so you put the pvc pipe in the ground and how does it not float away.

You are stuffing it into the mud so it will stand up. I would use a slide cable to get the raccoon away from the pipe so it doesn't get pulled out and lost.

They dont float. They sink and are very easy to spot laying there on the bottom. Only one we ever lost a second coon hauled it up out of reach.

If you cap the ends it will float. That would put a damper on the coon smelling what is inside.

What is everyone's favorite water trap setup for coon?

I like the pocket set the best just because of how easy and fast you can make them, i dont like to carry lots of stuff around with me when i go down to the water to make a few sets, also i dont like to park at one spot for to long i dont like when people drive by thats when stuff starts showing up gone! I also like the fish-stick set and all three of the kind of pipe sets that i use!
