For the smell on the hide there is several mixtures that people use on their pets. May work for the smell after skinning or before. Not sure if that is the solution never tried it personally.

I read somewhere skunks used to be one of the most popular furs for garments. They were marketed as American sable. Some act of congress made manufacturers disclose what everything in their products were. Once people found out what American sable really was the jig was up and no one wanted a skunk coat.

I let them air out a day if they spray then put them in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and take them to my fur buyer, he empties the bucket and pays me for the skunks. Not a lot but enough its worth the effort.

What do you get for them? Depends on the skunks and the time of the season if they are prime or not. may be $.50 or maybe $5 or more... ~ADC~

To finish the story for you Jeff. You are correct skunks were at one time one of the most popular furs. Until the Truth In Labeling act was passed and people found out what they really were. Too bad because they are a very soft and pretty fur.

I'm sorry dolittle but i'm not gonna waste my time with a skunk and take it up to the fur buyer to get $.50, i work a full time job durning trapping season and still try and run as big of line as i can do before work!

Note the regulations, page 13. Retrieval and Waste of Game While taking or attempting to take game or furbearing animals, you cannot abandon the injured animal without making a reasonable effort to retrieve it from the field. You cannot leave a usable portion of the game or furbearing animal in the field. “Usable portion” in this instance means the following: 1) for game, that part of an animal that is customarily processed for consumption; and 2) for furbearing animals, the fur or hide of the animal.

If you remove it from your trap and relocate it some where else you have satisfied the code. You will be hard pressed to get a CO to enforce this unless you are incredibly blatten and throwing them where people can see them from the road. I have been told this by more than one co. Oppossum are in the same catagory as dink coon. LLL

I guess if a CO catches you he will have to put the skunk in his truck for evidence? Ya, not happening I have milked a few for the essence and used a few under a rock as an call lure of sorts. The essence is worth more than the skunk itself.

Funny story, back when meth was a bigger problem I was checking traps early on morning and came out to the road as it was just getting light. Sheriff patrol car was parked up on the road waiting for me. So as we were talking he happens to see a hypodermic needle in the side pocket of my badlands bag. He gets a funny look on his face and I say "well I milk skunks with that" and he says "good enough for me" I still see him once in a while on that same stretch of road and he just smiles and waves as we pass. I sure those guys just expect the worse

I know some of my trappin buds think im crazy, but I will take all I can get. Some fur buyers give more for unskined skunks because they take the essence out of them. A few years back I made $204.00 bucks on 22 skunks an thats a fact......
