I welded a bunch on last fall and love them. I need to weld them on the rest of my traps. I have a thin piece of brass off of a door kickplate. I just put the brass between the jaws and spot the jaws in three spots. I also built a jig that I use to make the jaws. Like most people, I am always out to save a buck. By the time I'm done I think I am into the jaws for about $3.00 a doz. Back to the original question, I would recommend them to anyone.

I can BUY these from Rich for around a buck a set . Take a piece of sheet metal and cut it narrow enough to fit in the jaw. Put it in the vise. Clamp the metal in a vise. Get the trap upside down clamped onto the sheet metal. Put your jaw up against the sheet metal where it is centered and weld it into place. I weld mine on the ends and in the center. The sheet metal holds them until done and gives them clearance for the trap to close completely. To answer the question they will beef that little trap up like you wouldn't believe. I feel it makes one of the best coon/mink traps you can get. I can make these buying reg. jaw dukes cheaper than I can buy factory DJs. I think they are a true laminated jaw as well as the swelling of the foot will get between the chew gaurds and really hold. Hope this helps. LLL

Is there an advantage to Rich's shape or will straight, such as the 20 penny nail, work just as well? How much room does there need to be between them Larry, I guess I'm asking how heavy is your sheet metal?

The sheetmetal won't leave much of a gap at all. They will be about even with the outside of the jaw. The brass that I use is about as thick as 16ga. sheetmetal. The good part about brass is that weld won't stick to it if you would happen to "miss" or spill over.

As for the design or nails I think the nails will be ok but you only have two welds opposed to three on Riches. LLL
