Z traps

I had 4-6 pull-outs early on but none after I quit putting them at drowning sets, reduced the bait and paid closer attention to anything within the catch circle that the coon could get a hold of for leverage. This was a dream season for stabilizing DPs with little or no frost virtually the entire season...never be another like it at this latitude. I believe in a more typical year, the Z's stabilizing system will allow them to be used a lot deeper into the season than the Dukes and especially the LGs. I trapped all season with a broken thumb and the weaker springed Zs were actually an advantage to set. Did not like spending the two nights before season redoing the frozen swivels non every trap I got. Absolutely ridiculous. But a defective Z was better than a perfect Duke or LG IMO. A defective z is better than a perfect Duke or LG? What? I am going out on a limb and say that is not true. I lost 2 coon all season from pullouts and it was the same trap. The spring was weak and I stopped using it. I have only used Dukes and will be trying some Z traps but I don't think I will be buying any traps without spending a few minutes putting extra swivels inline and setting each to see how they work. I caught 200+ coon in the last seven days of January this last year and had NO losses. How can a trap that holds almost every coon be worse than a trap that is defective? Maybe it is because they are made in America? No thats not it. One problem with stronger or too strong of trap spring is if they get caught in the wrong spot it will aid in the coons twisting out of the trap. I am not knocking the Z but wonder what the real differance is. LLL

I can say that the new Ztrap will not be no one hand set trap and is worked up to take the extra power. And there will be no need to put extra swivels to it because already has 3 swivels on it for the rolling coon. The staking system is heavier to take the extra pounding in frozen ground. It will work into places you can't stick other DP's and release from the ground very easily. And for the most part with the Zinc parts it will be maintenance free.

Sounds like you got the bugs out on the new one. I really like the zink parts. I am sure they are great traps and will be looking at them more seriously at convention time. Hoping on a convention special!! LLL

A defective z is better than a perfect Duke or LG? What? I am going out on a limb and say that is not true. I am not knocking the Z but wonder what the real differance is. LLL I seriously doubt we will ever see another winter where tube type DPs can be used from day one until the end of the season without having stabilizer freeze in problems. The Dukes and certainly the LGs will go to the shed about the first week in December on my line. Or they will go to the shed to the milk crate I keep broken traps in if I leave them out much longer, probably carrying some blood. I am saying I like the Zs better because their stabilizing system is superior than the other tube type DPs on the market in that they can be used deeper into the season in a typical year without the inherent problems of frozen soil conditions.

I agree about the weather but still am confused about defective and perfect working order. If they are working perfectly why would you want one that isn't? I am working on an idea about the frozen ground thing. I do not like using dps below 20 degrees but have. LLL

A defect might be a bound swivel but does not make the trap in-operational like a missing dog or a bound loose jaw. A defect does not necessarily mean it is in-op.

Is there a website that gives details on all the improvment of the z trap and when, where or how to get them?
Thanks

Frozen ground?? Have you guys looked at the Coon Daggers? Carlis has slot in the side of his stabilizer that allows the trap to be slipped down on a piece of 3/16" rod in frozen ground (snugly).
Zip ties will fasten ANY dog proof to a protruding root or stick in sloppy or frozen ground and the coon will certainly chew the zip tie off and have full run of the chain very quickly. Anyway, this has certainly worked for most of us for the last 7 or 8 years!

Seen one today. They are noticably heavier than the old ones. I have to say I was impressed. Thanks for the early showing Marty. I will be making a purchase. LLL
