I used them towards the end of the year. The powder coat held up great. The traps worked great also. It is nice to buy a trap that is ready to go. My Dukes all had to have a center swivel installed and a swivel put on the end. Unless they changed them a 1/2 inch rerod stake would not fit in the factory swivel on the duke. Also really liked the push pull trigger. My dukes will hopefully be modified with a push pull this fall. I plan to buy many more of the Z-traps this year. And as I have said before on here, My snares will become pogo stakes on the end of them. I give them two thumbs up.

I bought a dozen Ztraps for my nephew's birthday/Christmas present near the end of December. He had never trapped before and ended up with about 30 coon on the season. The Z hooked him on trappin'.

just curiouse, and maybe the ones who used them can tell me,, I was going to get atleast a couple dozen z's this year and didn't know if they have the same holding power as the dukes or lil griz? Or how long will spring life last in them??? I really like the dp's and the z's look great, just wondering!!!

I used the Z, Griz and duke last season in a test so to speak. I found that the holding power of all three traps was more than enough. I noticed that the Griz and duke have far less swivel action on dry land and actually had opossum tangle in weeds and the swivels would bind and I would find the foot in the trap. (twisted off at the wrist).
I found it was easier to pull the Z after freeze up and it was easier the put in the ground and have it stay solid. The Griz limited me with the V stake and didn't stay locked in very well. The duke was tough to pull after freeze up, but was almost as easy to push in as a Z.
The trigger system on the Z just plainly out performed the others about 4/1 catch. I used the same bait all types of traps at the location and the Z had far less bait theft and was plainly catching more fur. I credit this to the push pull trigger system.
The powder coat held up pretty good, but after 20 coon in 1 trap it is silver again. I don't care about this although the brown does blend in super. The others I speed dipped brown and it wears off faster.
I only had two traps fall apart and they were both dukes. The pin holding the spring in came out.
I would say that the Z is the better trap by far. I will be getting 10 dozen in Central City this year. This is just my opinion and you may find something you like better. I didn't test the dagger because I don't like the way it looks and the price.
I think for the money you get a better trap in the Z.
Kurt

I can't give a comparison like Kurt, but I had an excellent season with the Z's. Had 1 bloody leg out of 65 coon and he was wound up in an electric fence I didn't see in the grass near the trap. I had to wake up 2 coons to dispatch as their heads were under their front leg while sleeping. I was treated very well by the Z trap staff. I plan on buying another 2 dozen traps this year. I never started "tuning " my traps till after the mice started cleaning out my bait. I even caught a few mice, but the Ztrap staff gave me better ideas on how to keep mice out of my traps, so i stopped loosing bait and stopped catching mice, while catching more coon. I can't thank them enough for a great product and all the help I received as a "beginner" trapper!! Thanks Ztrap staff!!! Marty

Cliff, the powder coating held up well. But I'm sorry to say the traps didn't hold coons very well. I lost more then I caught! 1 trap lost 3 coon and never held one.
And I didn't like baiting every day because the mice ate the bait. But thats with all DP's
To me the Duke DP had stronger springs then the Zs. I had to use a setting tools with the Dukes. I could set the Zs by hand.

4fur uses white paper cups, I used marshmallows with limited success. Ztrap staff told me to use golf balls, or even small eggs (give the coons a treat). I went from 100% of my 24 traps being cleaned out of bait everyday, to only 7 traps cleaned out , down to 3, and then 100% bait left alone. I started with 4 doz. golf balls, and ended the season with just enough golf balls to cover my 24 traps. Seams something was carrying them off?? Or the coon just scattered the balls around when trying to get out of the trap??? Sometimes I found the golf balls and sometimes I didn't. Any question I had all season I could just call Ztrap staff and they almost always had a solution to my problem. Very knowledgeable as they are trappers also. I dint have to go and try other traps when I am 100% satisfied with what I have now, just have to decide how many I can handle???

I had 4-6 pull-outs early on but none after I quit putting them at drowning sets, reduced the bait and paid closer attention to anything within the catch circle that the coon could get a hold of for leverage. This was a dream season for stabilizing DPs with little or no frost virtually the entire season...never be another like it at this latitude. I believe in a more typical year, the Z's stabilizing system will allow them to be used a lot deeper into the season than the Dukes and especially the LGs. I trapped all season with a broken thumb and the weaker springed Zs were actually an advantage to set. Did not like spending the two nights before season redoing the frozen swivels non every trap I got. Absolutely ridiculous. But a defective Z was better than a perfect Duke or LG IMO.

I questioned Ztrap staff about the swivels and was assured that this year the swivels will be ready to use out of the box!!! Now who's to say that there may be a defect now and then??? But they are all suppose to be ready to go out of the box!!! Now we all just have to decide how many to order???

I posted this earlier on the new z-trap. "I had the pleasure of handleing one of the new Z-traps today, WOW you won't be setting 100 of them by hand everyday." After reading 6hpmarty's reply I deleted my post not wanting people to get the wrong idea. The spring is very strong. I did have a few pull outs last year, but I can honestly say i think it was user error. Not the traps fault. IMO, if you think that you can take any trap out of a box, put a tag on them and start trapping, you will eventually find some that may not perform 100% The new trap is much stronger all the way around. Heavier stake, stronger spring, and better swivels. IMO, I highly reccomend the z-trap to anyone who is useing dp's.
