Do a lot of you guys use smear sets and if so what do you use for the bait?

Any commercial bait or ground type fish will do as long as you are on location. Do not use peanut butter, which I sometimes saw suggested on one of the more famous web sites. You will bring rats and mice to your sets worse than you do with regular bait. Also just a squirt of fish oil will work just fine in place of the bait but bait keeps them there stomping on your trap which is what you want.
If you don't have fish get some jack mackeral from the store or the cheapest canned catfood you can find. You can buy canned catfood for around a buck and get quite a few smears out of a can.

or you can also take corn cobs without corn on them, break em in halves or 3 pieces, ream out the inside hole and put in a dab of lure, then push them in the bank to make it flush with the bank and set trap underneath, works really good and smell stays there longer, alot of times still there after catch.
