A friend of mine is running nets. He double fillets his catfish and has been giving me all the trimmings from that.So far I have about 125#s. I was wondering what would be the best way to make bait for DP's.Should I grind it up pure or add anything to it?

Grinding by itself will work well but you may want to use glycerine or some preservative or it will get nasty in the first week or two. Also make sure it is under the dog or it could freeze up your trap. LLL

I have it froze in 1 gallon bags.I would guess them to be about 10#s per bag.How much glycerine would you add to a 1 gallon bag? I'm going to freeze them in that amount so I can thaw them as needed.

If you use glycerine it won't freeze! It is an antifreeze also. Not sure on amounts. Ask Braveheart or AC/DC I mean ADC, ;D LLL

It will slow it down but won't stop it. Your bait will still freeze with glycerine added too if you put it in a deep freeze but it will stay unfrozen down way below 32 degrees depending upon how much you add. I like 2 cups per gallon in my baits. IMO if you want a great bait out of that catfish build yourself a cheap smoker (old fridge maybe ) and smoke the fish in there then grind it and freeze it with your glycerine. You'll have one of the best baits out there. ~ADC~

ADC, Don't want you to spill any of your secrets if you don't want to, but do you feel smoking the fish is better than adding liquid smoke instead? Is glycol a better anti-freeze than glycerine?

I like the texture of the smoked fish better Scott, I'm not sure on that makes it "better".
I think glycol isn't as good as a preservative, but I've not specifically tested it. I don't like the glycol in bait as well though, I like the way the glycerine thickens the bait more.

I'd try a tablespoon in a gallon and add a little at a time until it smells good to you.

Sodium Benz or picklng salt for a preservative is also an option. I have always wondered if you use salt if it will turn a coon off. I am not concerned with the first coon on sight cause he is not going any where but how about the one that takes the bait and don't eat it cause it is salty. The next night will that coon walk right by ? I have caught alot of coon and in the snow you can see where the buddy took the carp head up the bank and ate it. I always like to see this because I will usually catch him the next night! Same way with mink. Wondering about your thoughts on this. LLL

They will eat bait preserved with SB. The fish I salt to preserve I use under my cage traps and the coons don't ever get to really taste it until they are caught. I have the same concern with the salted fish as you LLL as far as it not being very palatable to a coon. I like bait they don't want to stop eating.

I use a bout a 1/4 cup of salt per gallon of ground fish and it stays fresh and thawed in trapping conditions. The coon really love to eat this so i know that the amount of salt i am using is just fine. Thanks.

not too far off subject glycol works great to cut shelfish oil, fishoil , sweet corn oil, speriment ect and other liquids to get more out in squeeze bottles and it a excellent antifreeze for that purpose.
