Im a believer for sure. I used them the last 10 days of the season in what open water I had, wow could not believe how great they worked. They really pulled the coon & mink in.
Was out of fish so I used 1/2 a muskrat on each stake. 16 gauge wire was used to wire the muskrat to the stake. If not i was Just feeding the coon in alot of places. Use some lured eared corn too, it worked just as good as the muskrat (caught a few muskrat too using the eared corn)
There is a learning curve on trap placement which i need to work on for next season. I used 1.75 duke with the pans cut down on the side (shaped like a dogbone). When I used two traps I placed both traps side by side. That placement seemed to be better than two trap place farther apart.
Also used Dp traps wire to the stake top with picture wire. I wish there was a snap on or breakaway so that you could mount the DP trap to the 3/8 stake, adjustable would even make it better. All set were place in deeper water. Used lured cat food for bait.
On the last day the stakes were very easy to pull out. I was impressed how fast it took to pull the line.
I rank this set the #1 I have ever used in a winter thaw out.
How many of you guys use this set start to finish of the season?
Any ideas on modified bait holders welded to the stake tops?
Thank You 4Fur for sharing this set.

I used them the last few days of the season and just hammered the coon, also picked up a mink and a rat too.
I also felt I was feeding the coon with the rats. I'm going to shoot a few hundred carp for next year and use the heads.
Have any spades pop off the posts when you hammered them in? I had several do this, so they will be welded on next year.
Seems like you can have a hundred of these things set in no time. Plus everyone else has hung up the traps for the year, so there is no competition!

i used them, but think like everything the coon will learn to avoid them. i will not use them early season and will stick with the pocket set, then pvc set and use the stick set late in season when bank ice is a problem.

coontrappernick, yes the spades fell off of several of mine when I hammered on them until I welded them on. The factory welds were not well done. I, too, will be welding all of the spades before putting the stakes in use.

Them things are sharp too! Might need some chain mail gloves to help pull them out next year

I, too, will be welding all of the spades before putting the stakes in use. I have better luck with the older fence posts, the new ones were very cheap. Go to a farm sale or two this summer and you can probably pick up quite a few dirt cheap.

I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully I find a couple hundred of them.

I used this set a year ago and caught soaring birds and raptors even with the rat wrapped in grass. My CO even was involved in one case and strongly recommended not to use this set or I would catch more raptors. I haven't had that problem with fish heads but I didn't have any when I was using the rats for bait. Maybe you haven't had this problem but it can and will happen. JMHO.

I'm really excited that a lot of people on here have had success with the Fish stick! But I'm not surprised because if it works for me it has to work for anyone! LOL The only reservation I had about posting the FS is those who use bloody meat such as muskrat or beaver rather than fish for bait. I've always said to please be aware of exposed bait laws and use common sense. When an experienced trapper like Hooter has problems it confirms my worries. My name will be mud when enough non-targets cause a change in our exposed bait laws, I fear. Looks like I'll be Daddy Dr. with my 4 yr. old tomorrow so maybe I'll have time to talk about why fish sticks haven't been part of my early season line up to this point. But I have some ideas on how they could be...and maybe some pictures! ;D

hey minnow i had a guy show me a way to put the dps on a piece of reorod . He used he duke dp's a piece of rerod with two small thin pieces of zipties the plastic ones he stakes the trap as usual then pushes or hammers in the rerod takes the dp and zipties the trap to the rod the trap must be set already. he used dry catfood and cherry ol and fishoil mixed. the whole unit when ready to go was 6 to 8 inches off of the ground. When he would make a catch the coon is strong enough to break the ziptie free of steak and was waiting for u when you get there. I know when its cold the plastic ziptie breaks real easy when twisted just a little bit

I tried a similair set up but I think the real issue with these is animal comfort. The cold temps are not good on poor circulation. LLL

How many of you guys use this set start to finish of the season? Minnow I've just tried this set early season some but found it has it's limitations. First, the exposed bait taints very quickly in the warm temperatures we normally have. Also, thawed carp heads are way easier for coon to steal than frozen ones. So you can really go through a lot of bait in a hurry catching coon or not. I never caught a heron but worried about it since they are still around. But I guess the reason it didn't work for me was that other things worked better, Minnow. Depending on the market and local animal populations, I concentrate on 'rats for the first 10-14 days of the season and/or run my DP's. By the 20th of Nov., all the coon and almost all of the mink are prime so I switch to pockets and run them until freeze up. Then I get my FS's and baited 220 box type sets out and run them until the end of the season. If a guy used whole bullheads wired to the posts and didn't care about catching early season mink, I think it would work better.

Them things are sharp too! I am really surprised no one has coon getting cut on these! 2 years ago I used the same type of stake just to stake a blind set for coon, mink, and rats. Coon was caught and he cut his stomach open on the spade part. He was dead with intestines hanging out and wrapped around the stake. Not a pretty sight! This year, first year using FS, I haven't had a problem but could see it happening.
