If you can not have a body grip/conibear on land well wouldn't a buck set be the same as having it on land? I'm still kinda new at trapping an i just got to thinking that and now its got me wondering?

Where are you from coonmaster (state, county, or city)?
In Iowa we are allowed to use up to 220 sized bodygrippers on land. All 280's and larger have to be completely submerged. So bucket sets with 160's or 220's are legal. Use caution on where you set them to avoid domestic pets though.

If you cant set it on land per the law than yes the bucket set would be illegal.
Where do you live and what are your regs.

They must of meant the larger bodygrippers Paul. Good of you to ask though, probably others out there that didn't know either. ~ADC~

Just keep in mind the distance from houses with your conibears.

Just checked the Ia DNR website. It reads:
Conibears that EXCEED 8" jaw spread shall be placed entirely under water.
The way I read it is that a 280 has a 8" jaw spread and doesn't EXCEED the 8" spread, so it should be legal!

I always thought they were legal to set on land other than 200 yds from a drive. I don't ever use mine but they DO NOT exceed 8'' and that is the law. LLL

just be safe where you set them a great tool to use but can get real ugly very fast to many pheasent hunters around here to use them bad enough with a snare let alone a bodygrip .

Yes you have to be cautious where you put them. Back in the good old days we had pheasants and the hunters that chase them around here but they are now both sort of extinct.

ALL BRANDS of 280's EXCEED the 8" limit and ARE ILLEGAL on land!
They are measured but outside measurements, you WILL be ticketed.
I know I am right on this one. Sorry guys!

I have not seen any 280s that would be legal in Iowa on dry land. Good point on the measurement being from the outside of the set trap.

Gene If they measure the outside of Jaw and not the spread Jaymie and Gene are right. Use a 220 and it will get the same results. Conis are piss poor K9 traps anyway. Just hang a snare. LLL
