Getting questions from bank employees about the new Iowa carry law.
Guys who have taken the new course, are they at least stressing carrying your weapon concealed rather than exposed?

Thanks I am hoping that they are stressing a concealed carry I know a couple guys who will be getting permits that had previously been revoked by my Sheriff because they wanted the world to know they were packing every where they went.

Actually you have always been able to open carry in Iowa without a permit, nothing in state law forbids it. I'm not saying it's a good idea, but it has always been legal here.

Yeah, I don't believe k9 was saying it wasn't legal before, I think what he's asking is whether or not these instructors for these courses are stressing carrying your weapon concealed, rather than openly.

Yes Nick that is what I am saying. Just because you can does not mean that you should. I have some bank employees locally who are very concerned about open carry by customers while in the bank. It concerns me too.
I know most gun owners are respectful and discreet. However I know some true morons also who will be able to carry with the new law and will likely want the world to know it.
I just want to know if these instructors are teaching them the responsibility that goes with packing heat, that way if I get called on one of these guys I can at least try and guilt them a bit about the fact that they are carrying contrary to how they were traiined.
I don't want wild west, I don't want no guns at all, I just want reasonable concealed carry.

I agree with you guys %100. The instructor I had is putting out that information and to be discreet and carry concealed. I would like to think that all of the instructors are, but who knows...

My instructor suggested concealed carry. Just because "its a good idea" to not let everybody know you are carrying. I'm paraphrasing So what if something does happen. Folks will expect the guy with the gun to step forward and use it. And who do you suppose will get shot first. The guy with the gun. end paraphrasing imho The subjects covered in the class were just plain good old common sense. Have a good 1 just

Unless I've completely missed somthing, the only places under the new laws that it isn't legal to carry with permit are public schools and federal building (post offices included). Banks are private property and it's up to the owner just my your or my house. Unless your in Utah, schools are OK there, they know what they're doing, no gun free target rich zones.

Correct a bank is private property it's just not wise to walk into one with a gun prominently displayed.

I took the,"CPL" class Dec 4th in MI. I do not own a Pistol as of yet. But wanted one for the trap-line, and just wanted to be Legal. It was a ALL day class, with 2 hours of shooting. The 2 NRA Instructors did a great job. We had a class of 13. Cost; 150.00$ for the Class, 25.00$ for the rounds I shot off,"2 Boxes of .38's". Now I need to go to the County Clerks office, shell out 113.00$ more and go to the County Sheriff's to get finger printed. A lot of money so far for not even having a Pistol yet. I'll send my wife to the class this spring. We had a Lawyer talk to us for 2 hours about MI's gun laws and CPL. No matter what, I still can NOT carry a Pistol ; on Church Property, School, Hospital or any ,"Fire Arm Free Zones".
As with any thing you have degrees/limits. I do not have the want/need to carry a pistol on me 24-7-365. Some people do. For Home protection, best thing; Short barrel pump shot gun, loaded with Buckshot.
I was in the Grocery store the other day. Here is this guy with a 44 strapped on him , in full view. I ended up talking to him, He was a INSTRUCTOR , loved his guns and shooting. It was clear to me that when I first saw him, that he had just came in from Deer Hunting. He was legal and well inside the law. But I would of thought that it would of been better to just leave the gun in the truck, locked up. There was enough Donuts for everyone.
Just because the speed limit is 70 mph, does not mean you got to go 70 all the time.
K9 this is what the lawyer told us; "Cops are just people that love guns and like to drive fast" If you are in a shooting don't speak to them unless you have representation, I take the 5th.
All this and all I want, is to use a Pistol on the Trap-line.
In MI, there is a difference between a CCW and a CPL. CCW--Carrying Concealed Weapon--ie Weapon---Nub-Chucks, Brass Knuckles. CPL---Carrying Pistol License
MI is a, "Shall" Issue State now. It was a,"May" Issue State.

I just wanted to make a clarification to the following statement as stated above:
Actually you have always been able to open carry in Iowa without a permit, nothing in state law forbids it. I'm not saying it's a good idea, but it has always been legal here.
Yes, it is currently legal to open carry a handgun while not in the city limits of an incorporated city in Iowa, and while not in a vehicle on a public highway. Carrying a loaded firearm open or concealed within the city limits off of your own property without a permit to carry is an aggrevated misdemeanor.
I just wanted to make that clear so no one inadvertantly made a mistake and got themselves into trouble. cf

Open carry does one thing, it makes the people around you nervous. Responsible citizens carry concealed, it keeps everyone from getting their panties in a bunch.

We wre told that Casino's are a no no to carry in also. I'm glad I don't live in MI. Sounds like alot of work and money to get a permit there. Casino's are on the list of not carrying a Pistol also. MI/Government, has taxed and regulated it self out of Business. Un-Friendly state to do Business. Plus 8 years of a Governor,"Female Democrat", that robbed Peter to pay Paul. I myself looked at how much cheaper it is in other states to get a CPL. But what do you do? Another thing to look at with your CPL, is other states laws on them. Not all states are Reciprocal, I know that my CPL in MI, is no good in WI, not at all. But I'm good with IN, OH, IL and a bunch of others. If your going to travel across state lines, do not assume, KNOW. All & all it is a good thing and I recommend for anyone to take the coarse, and get a CPL. In , MI the CPL is also my purchase permit. Also, if I am Carrying, and get pulled over by Johnny Law. I MUST immediately Inform him that I am or am not carrying, and along with Drivers License, hand over my CPL card. STANLEY

Ya it is worth the money to get it. We will be able to get a five year permit after the first of the year and they will be offering a class for the Utah permit. From what I was told if we get the Utha permit we will still need the Iowa permit if we are a resident. But we should be good for about 32 states w/ a Uhta & Iowa permit. It sounds like it will take $65 and 4 hours.

I always carry concealed except when on the trapline. Concealed may be as simple as a shirt pulled over your pistol. If I ever had to use it on anything other than a coon (Heaven Forbid) I would rather the bad guy not see it coming. You cannot carry in 3 places in IA 1) Casinos 2) Airports 3)court houses. You can carry in a business that serves alcohol but one drink and your permit is no longer valid and I think that could be considered an aggravated misdemeanor. LLL

Under new law you can carry while drinking as long as under the 0.08% just like driving.
Post office about got me last summer, was going to drop a Netflix DVD inside for quicker return, opened the door to see what looked like metal detectors, turned and left.
