Now what happened to all of that talk from last fall "we have no rats" or "rat numbers are down" and now I am see comments about wanting a spring rat season. . Or is it $ talking with rat prices climbing. ;D Ron did make a comment about spring rat trapping in his 2010-11 season proposal, but the trap could only be placed inside of a hut. So maybe

BIG MISTAKE,,,DAMAGED RATS,,,LIKE KILLING HEN PHEASANTS Paul ,I know what you are talking about and agree with you mostly. If you get them right after ice out most are not bit up. However if you don't drown them right away they will fight. Is spring beaver a big mistake beings how they really get torn up in spring?

BIG MISTAKE,,,DAMAGED RATS,,,LIKE KILLING HEN PHEASANTS Paul- I don't understand your comment ...I'm kinda slow could you explain it to me? i think it would be to hard on the general rat population,,,we are just getting population back where it is worth hitting the sloughs,,,drought can take care of that in a hurry,,,as can spring trapping,,did u ever wonder why the DNR does not allow hen pheasant harvest,,,in my opinion spring rat trapping would be the same thing,,,i don't trap spring beaver for the same reasson's,,,,as far as i know the only time spring rat season's were held in iowa in modern times was when rats over populated the slough's and were cutting to many cattails and it was hurting the duck hunting,,,,how many of you have ever done spring rat trapping after the ice is out,,,if u have u know the damage,,,minnesota and south dakota alow opening the house's,,,i would be AGAINST that in iowa also

Plus a trapper would make extra money off the land by trapping the rats. And you know the Dnr doesn't like anyone making money off Nature other than the State of Iowa.

Actually I dont think the DNR would be as opposed to lengthing all seasons as much as trappers are against it!!??. Im all for opening ALL seasons through the month of febuary. And the rat season should run through the beaver season and we oughta have our last 2 weeks of beaver season back as well. They didnt bother to protect the otter before we had a season on them so why now? If states such as Arkansas Mississippi and Kentucky can do it why cant we? Im all for getting all they'll give us.

I'm all about getting the beaver season back too. And I have commented to Ron about this. From one we have a later ice out in northern IA and that means no spring castor mound set

one more thing about the spring beaver season. I asked Ron, are there enough spring beaver trappers out trapping and catching otter to affect the population? My thoughts NO so biologically why did the dates get changed?

I will say that when I used to trap beaver (I aint mad at em no more lol) I caught alot of otters thats why I didnt and still dont drown beaver in footholds I hold em all alive or use conibears. But I'm with you yogi there aint that many guys out there doin it. I'm going step out on a limb here and say that MOST not all spring beaver trappers are just doing it too scratch an itch. I used to go out and catch between 150 - 180 of em here in the spring. And yeagh you're gona catch some otters as well as everything els. It happens. But like I said they didnt worry bout it then so why now? And I still say our seasons need lengthend.
