#3 Montanas or #3 Bridgers, fully modified using steel screen.
I've used the MB 550 and don't care for it. And it's only an inch larger jaw spread than my mink traps.

If money were no object I'd have a bunch of MB650's just for coyotes.

I'm not really a big yote catcher, but I like my MB650's. No modifying---- just dye, wax, and set

Like ADC said, if the price wasnt the issue I personally have a pile of MJ-600's. But since they aren't free I probably would pick the same as Nick. #3 Montanas are nice.

I finally broke down and bought some 650 cast jaws. Wish I would have done it long ago. No more smooth steel jaws for my coyote line. The cast jaws are the way to go. A rough/flat sandpaper like surface. No slipping with these things. And big enough to get the job done. I/m done with #2 sized traps for coyotes. I/ll buy more.

I prefer #3 Montgomery or Montana dogless traps.
Really interested to see the Bridger 3 dogless that is being tested this year.

650s are built like a tank and will last several lifetimes....but a elephant can stand on the back part of the pan and it won't go off

For those who sold off the 650s....Why? one stated a dead spot on the back of the pan. I personally have not had a trap that was stepped on that didn't have an animal sitting there...but they were the cast jaw models...if that makes and difference.
A friend used them with wax paper covers and didn't like them. I have had issues in the past with wax paper so don't touch the stuff anymore.

Don't know of an easy way to use steel screen with MB 650s. And when having traps freeze down during snow or rain, or leaching during freeze/thaw. It's much easier to chip frozen dirt off of Monty #3 style traps, and get the trap working to reset. I don't like wire levers. (Personal Preference) And don't overlook what Braveheart said about the twist link chain, nearly essential on the Montana #3 trap or Montys. Plus the sterling swivels eat up grass.

Urban sprawl has redefined my definition of the best K-9 trap. Just down the road from my house several days ago... And today at 4:00... The owner of the dog will tell me she is sorry about her dog ruining my trap when I see her walking her two dogs tomorrow but I'd be talking to her lawyer if that 13 yr. old dog was caught in a coyote sized foothold. I bought a dozen MB550s at Winterset on the advice of DFox and Yogi. You are right Nick about their size. Here is the MB 550 compared to my favorite K-9 traps for my area; the Victor 1.75 2 and 4 coiled OS jaws... I made some sets today using the 550s and will let you know how they work if I have any action, Marcus. What kind of K-9 traps do you have now?

Shortly after the season opened this fall, I "toe-nailed" three yotes in my "highly modified" #2 Montys.
I do own and use some MB 650Cs and like them very well. They catch coyotes and hold them very well.
I ordered a dozen of the MB 550, 4 coiled models and received them in one day from MN Trap Supply (SUPER SERVICE).
The day after I received them, I put about half of them in the ground, STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX! The next morning I had my first coyote catch in a box-fresh MB550.
I caught several more in the same type trap, and even my #2 yote of the year in the very same trap/set that I caught the first one it, the next day..... (He must have been stupid or something)
I LIKE the MB 550s and will buy more of them.
I also caught a few coon in them and they held the coon very well in the beautifully CAST OFF-SET JAWS.........
THANKS MB..........

I, too, have modified my thoughts on coyote traps due to the suburban sprawl mentioned by 4fur. I have caught coyotes in many different sized traps and prefer a #3 coilspring completely modified using a steel screen pan cover. In many of my canine locations today, I find myself "mink" trapping my coyotes with Bridger 1.65, MB550 or KB5.5 traps. The larger traditional coyote traps with offset jaws, fully modified do not hurt big dogs but can be hard on little ones and they scare our city folk. I agree with Tex on the MB550 being "box ready" with their wide/cast jaws, just add a cable stake and go.

I have some MB 550 and Bridger#2 mods and they both work real good for me. The MB 650 has way more pan tenion than the 550. According to my pan tester the MB 550 has about 1.25-1.50 lbs tenion And thats where i set my bridgers. Thanks

We run almost all Dukes on land...#1.75, #2, and some #3s....We have used others but both of us will stick with the number 2s for our favorite..The answer would be different of course if it were for a better made trap and also if cost wasn't a difference but when you have as many deer hunters and farmers around here as we do I would rather have an $8 set up taken or destroyed by a tractor than a MB or Bridger. They really have performed very well for us over the years and we will continue to use them. For those of you that have BMI #3s, what do you think of them? I love the idea behind them and the jaw spread but the metal on them just isn't as strong as I would like...

The MB 650 has way more pan tension than the 550. According to my pan tester the MB 550 has about 1.25-1.50 lbs tension And thats where i set my bridgers. Thanks I was skeptical about the advertised pan tension on my new 550s. Can't complain about this catch, though... Looks like the spring pins bend pretty easily from the photo but didn't have any problems remaking the set.
