Not saying this is in the works. There was some discussion of this at the recent ITA convention and I'd appreciate some opinions to take to the ITA Winter BOD meeting. Thanks Tom/hvtrapper

I voted yes Tom. I'd rather it be an either/or situation for those who don't mind their name on there and don't want to replace their tags. ~ADC~

I know an idiot who listed their phone number on his trap tags for a while. I'll never be that stupid again! LOL

Is the number on our license the same every year? If it is the same, I would say yes, however I'm not keen on retagging very year.

Scott, The DNR already knows you as a number. They can use your ID number to pull up your information. Just look above the barcode on your licence. it is your customer ID. I just checked and my number has been the same as least since 07. (thats all the old ones i could find in a hurry)

i guess my vote is no as i feel proud of what i do for a hobby and who i am as an outdoorsman that is if the issue is so that antis would be less likely to harrass me for carrying on a tradition older then america itself i cant think of another reason to go with just the dnr number but if there is another reason i would possibley change my vote

Thanks Horn.
In my opinion, people are nosey and will disturb your set just to find out who you are without meaning to do any harm. If they can't find out who you are on the spot because of a number instead of your name, I think they will be less likely to look.

I am sure that there are guys who have been harassed by this bit of info on their traps but I would be interested in hearing a few tales, I personally have not been. Sorry I am not trying to deviate from the original topic here. I would like to see either tag become a common place.

I've not had any problems personally, either. But this was brought up to me and made sense. I'm proud of who I am and what I'm doing but doesn't mean that I don't try and maintain a low profile. Probably more important to those of us who live and trap in the more populous parts of the state.

I agree with ADC, Id like to use the ones I have but would replace them with the ID # when needed

I guess that if anyone has any good reason to know who I am that they will have no problem going to the DNR to request the information.

If you set your traps legally there should be no one reading the tags for any reason,,, so I think if they can't figure out who I am by reading my tags the better for me. Maybe, just maybe, the would be thieves won't steal the traps if they are not sure who's traps they are, could be one of their buddies. (wishful thinking ) As far as any troubles I have had due to my name and address on my tags,,, the only time I can recall is when a pissed off farmer found my phone number through the name/address and called to chew my rear for setting snares in "his ditch". ~ADC~

I believe theft is a major concern of ID number proponents. Guy reads your tag, gets your address and pays your trap shed a visit, helping himself to your fur and equipment while you are on the line.

I CAN SEE NO REAL REASON FOR A TAG OF ANY KIND,,IS THE THIEF AND OR VIOALTOR GOING TO TAG A TRAP HE SETS ILLEAGALLY?,,I DOUBT IT,,HE WILL HOWEVER STEAL MY TRAP WITH A TAG ON IT AND SET IT ILLEAGALLY,,WHO IS TO BLAME THEN,,OH AND THEN I MISS ONE OF 150 TRAPS AND SET AN UNTATAGGED TRAP,,AND GET A FINE,,,OR I HAVE A TRAP WITH NO TAG ON IT AND TAKE IT HOME CAUSE I DON'T HAVE ANY MORE TAGS WITH ME AND I GET A TICKET CAUSE I AM TRAPPING WITH AN UNTAGGED TRAP,,,HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE HAD TRAPS IN THE BACK OF YOUR TRUCK CHECKED BY A WARDEN FOR TAGS?,,,HAVE ANY OF YOU EVER HAD AN ANIMAL CHEW OFF A TAG AND NOT NOTICE IT UNTIL MUCH LATER?,,OR EVEN CHEW IT UNTIL IT IS NOT READABLE?,,THAT IS A VIOLATION ALSO,,THE TAG MUST BE LEGIABLE,,,I GUESS I HAVE RANTED LONG ENOUGH,,,BUT I AM NOT GOING TO CHANGE MY MIND THE THE IOWA TRAP TAG LAW,,,IN MY OPINION IT IS WORTHLESS

a number would be a good thing.....it seems like lots of trappers look at other trapper tags up here....they pull my trap out of it's bed just to peel my tag open to snoop.....then the trap don't go back proper
LEAVE MY TRAP ALONE IT"S NOT YOURS
guys are more worried about the next guy than catching fur

We have several people explaining reasons behind the Yes Votes.
Will some one explain the No Votes.
I am interested in others opinions and may have overlooked something that could change my mind.

you end up with a off target..... your legal as can be and the owner finds it....your tag just put a direct line to you...the DNR should be called they know how to handle it ....but allot of times the owner gets a hold of the guy trapping instead of calling the law.....a big mess for trapping in a whole....a number system would be better

Side Note; Is it illegal to have a "untagged" trap in your vehicle?
Does this prove "intent" to set said trap?
I cannot find anything here in Nebraska that says that possession of an untagged trap is illegal. Heaven forbid that I should be coming home from a Iowa convention with traps in the back of my truck without tags. I would probably get cited in Iowa for: 1). Trapping out of state without a license 2). Possessing a illegally marked trap. 3). Trapping out of season.
Carrying a trap doesn't prove intent, at least in my way of thinking.

I voted NO for just the reason of replacement cost. All of my ( also my son when possible ) Kill pole stakes are tagged with my name and his name and my address and all our snares are tagged seporate also. And now this year he wants to learn more on water sets to, so thats cool to. When i prestake and set out during season my killpole tags are just folded over , so then can be opened up and inspected by an officer LEGALLY. After a couple of days almost all the tags are wide OPEN. whats that mean, NO WAY has an officer checked all of those ( specially since the GW officer KNOWS my setup ) BUT that others have checked my tags ( NOT LEGALLY ) BUT since making my tags more visible the rest of my SET goes undisturbed.

I've got to admit I've looked at someone elses tag just to see who was trapping along side me. Not a big deal if you ask me. Its OK if you look at mine -within reason- just don't disturb the set. If they are gonna change it just make it either for a few years so i can change slowly. I don't wanna have to be changing all my tags at once. There wasn't a don't particularly care choice so i didn't vote. just

for the guys that look at other guys tags......your under a bridge grabin a trap that's not your's and the owner come along...how does that look?....a water sets should be well bedded with the chain buried so the coon don't flip it....the only way a guy is going to see my tag it to pull everything out to get a look at it....and i get guys pulling sets out so they can have a gander at my tag.....there's nothing to gain to see who's trapping around you.....

I had to re tag a couple of years ago when we moved. It cost a few bucks.
Also it would take care of the Whats got to be on my tag questions. One answer: Your DNR number. If you want to put more on Feel free to.
