Can you use a 280 conibear that is not submerged in water? I currently do not own any, but was just wandering, since the iowa code says if you use anything greater than 8 in. it must be submerged in water. Just wandering because a 280 does not exceed 8 in.
Thanks guys and gals

They will be illegal on land before the season begins. They made an error on the regulation handbook and it will be fixed this year and they will again be enforcing it according to two of my COs. LLL

Make sure that you measure them while set at the widest point. there are several traps that increase in jaw size ( fractions if an inch) when set, I would assume this is due to the play in the jaw rivets. When in doubt? Use a 220!

If you have some 280's set them and measure them Outside jaw to outside jaw it must be 8 or less inches Iv got a couple 280 Belisles that are legal to use In that way.

was thinking of getting a few as do not have them.anyone know what outside measurements are on what brands? i heard a duke 280 is a little bigger.i looked up in dnr regs and it does say 8 inches from outside jaws, was thinking of getting few along time ago because easier to submerge than 330 if be set. is beaver easier to get though a submerged 280 or 330 than 1 half or less submerged? i know is alot easier to not submerge alot times to make set and pass up on setting 330s many times in spring because to much work or cannot make good set with submerged trap

Its been my experience that they will swim through a half submerged body grip more readily than submerged at mound sets. I've found it requires a little more specific type setting to really make submerged body grips effective at mound sets. Than again, maybe I just don't know what I'm doing.

was thinking of getting a few as do not have them.anyone know what outside measurements are on what brands? Belisle are the only 280 that meets the 8" or less "inside measurement" restriction that I'm aware of. That said, if they change the wording to read "outside" instead of "inside" measurement, as LLL says they are planning to do this year, none will pass. Outside is the way they were to be measured according to the DNR's "standardized" way of measuring them as of a few years ago but apparently they inadvertently worded the 2013-14 regulations "inside" and plan to change that to "outside" in the 2014-15 booklet. On the plus side 280 Belisle is a very good trap and will hold nearly all its resale value so a person could do well to by some for this spring beaver season and if the DNR should actually change their wording you could sell them and not lose much of any money, probably make up for it in what you'd catch in them this spring.
