I tried a float last year with no luck. (Only 2 days due to freeze up)And I knew there were rats there..just a piece of osb with 2x4 rails and corn as bait. Making it a tunnel type float..loaned a local kid some colony traps and he said he has a rat on his float for 6 days straight. Was it just my bad luck to not catch one? Anyone have a special type of float or bait they use with success in the larger Creeks? Thanks

I never really have had any luck with float sets, even back when I was a kid and there was a lot of rats. My son and I put out a couple float sets this season and had no muskrats. I bought my son some rat clips for Christmas this year. Give them a try next season.

I use stools baited with corn and have had good luck. In the water Out of the water. My favorite under the ice setup. Sure wish there were more rats around here.

So you can use bait under the ice? Might try that probably not tomorrow though.

Has anybody tried these rat clips on muskrat? Bought some to try for next season. Rat clips appear to be based on a Horicon marsh method that used #9 wire as the trap holder. Not used the rat clips but have used the #9 wire for years.

Tried some this year and caught 1 out of 8 floats over 2 weeks. Had 4 colony traps and 10 blind 110s out for 2.5 weeks and caught 29. I have floats for sale if anybody wants any

Floats have always been traditionally a spring time muskrat catcher. Too bad we can't use them then in Iowa. I wouldn't bother setting them in the fall. A simple corn set on the bank or a pole like above is all I'd do for baited sets, along with colony traps and conibears in BE and den sets... if I were getting in the water. Anyone have a reasonable explanation why they work good in spring and not in fall? ~ADC~

I prefer using those like Big Tom uses for the following reasons and

Last year when I hit the bigger creeks and couldn't find the dens I used a lot of stools in areas I knew they were, and caught about half of them on stools. I think the key to using them in the fall is to put them about a foot or two off the bank and pile grass on them to make them look natural.
