Mink of course are mouser, I suppose coon are, too. Anyone know? While raking hay I watched a coon pull mice out of the windrows I hadn't raked yet. Surprised me how fast it caught on to them.

I've never seen mice so bad. I know one farmer who but $100 worth of poison in a big machine shed where he stores his equipment and he said it was all gone in a week! Mice love enclosed areas (like buckets) to feed. Big carp heads (1/2-3/4 lb.) hung in the back of my baited 220 set up seems to be fairly mouse proof. Especially when the head is frozen hard as a rock. Mink of course are mouser, I suppose coon are, too. Anyone know? It just doesn't seem like the coon on my line have been as hungry this year as Januaries past. In january's past I didnt know the coon ran at this time Until this year i come on here and a few Hardcore Men talk about Piling them up.. I was amazed today at the number of tracks i found in the fresh snow from lastnight i really thought that wind and cold would of shut them all down lastnight.

I seen fresh coyote, fox, turkey and deer tracks not one fresh coon track on my line this morning. I did meet up with one yote that couldn't outrun my dpms though! I did catch a several coons with snow on them I assume I caught them early yesterday morning or sometime throughout the day yesterday cause they sure didn't run in my neck of the woods last night

YES mice are terrible! Been having whole 6 inch shad disappearing overnite. Couldnt tell if a coon raked it out or the mice packed it away due to poor tracking conditions. But mice turds proved they had sure been there. Been catching coon, have had way too many stop to lick up the strawberry jelley and eat the catfood out front and move on. (thanks 4fur) Have had a few of the coon raking the shad out also. Big hunks of carp eleminate the bait thefts and I knew it. Just wasnt prepared or expecting to be trapping this long. Been a handful of different problems with these cubbies this year. Like Wayne suggested though. They dont seem starving like they should be. Either they go in after it or they just taste it and move on. IMO the more you can cover the bucket with sticks, logs, debris the more success you will have. I tried the coon pee out front of cubbies and my tests are inconclusive. Maybe it was old pee Day four I started adding beaver castor to each one. No real consistencies there either. Either they are hungry enough to go in after the stinking shad or they arent.

Haven't had any luck in my buckets. Had something pee infront of one but that's it. I have everything but the kitchen sink in them now. Jelly was added today. there's a coupple different coon baits, Cavens K-9 bait and lure, cat food mixed with Salmon oil and ansine oil. Some cherry oil stuff also. Fox pee and or boars delight on top or around the bucket.

I haven't had a coon for awhile now. Had several opossum this week, but aren't hardly even seeing coon sign. Have been using hawkers coon lure and marshmallows. I have tried using a red fox gland lure and still no luck. I am setup on a creek and by some woods. Any advice on locating some coon?

My coon are extremely hungry and if we have winter until June again this year, I expect the coon numbers will take another big hit this year. I think I getting almost all the coon that are within 5 feet to stick there head in to take look. The fur has been great and I think it stay great until the next artic vortex due in a little over a week. Depending on how much snow there is, if you can get between some denning and some open water you will be golden.

Finally had coon movement. They must have had other things on their minds cause they visited 4 of my 5 sets on the this creek and I didn't have a single coon.

I had a coon visit a fish stick set 2 nights in a row and not get caught he just stepped in the water enough to eat on the fish then he backed out and down the creek he went so today when i rebaited i moved the traps and put some sticks around the back of the fish so the only way the coon can get to it is over my traps.Note: I did have my fish Wired to the stake!

I tried baiting my dps with a mink bait I made. It has mackeral, sardines and oysters in it. I hope this helps them commit.

Knocked em last night! Hope tonight is better. Spent all day taking coon and sticks out of my conis. Coyote hunters think its ok to disarm a trap if they are hunting that area!

I think this is the time you make the very most on your put up. You will be paid well for those big coon that aren't rubbed to bad. In my experience DP's are even a lower % trap then buckets this time of year. I have gotten a few using a Rick Hemseth bait that smelled good and didn't freeze. Just my two cents.

The reason I am using dps is cause I am new to trapping this year and that is all I have so far. Trying to learn and get more traps as I go. I have added 2 220's to my traps. I will be getting more traps as the year goes on. I plan to have more for this November. Just trying to make due with what I have.

I meant to put this up with the quote outdoorsman. The dp's are still working every bit as well as the bucket set's IMO. You need to get them set at the base of active den trees or active trails where you are seeing coon tracks in the snow or mud. All I use is marshmallows in them for bait and they are still attracting plenty of coons into my dp's. You just need to get them where the coons are. Good luck

I have two farms I am set on. One I am on a creek and had 4 of my 5 sets visited last night, they just didn't commit. I had tracks walk by several others on the other farm around 10-12 yards out and didn't even investigate. I hope I can get them to commit tonight! I have marshmallows in mine too with Hawbakers coon lure. I have also tried putting some red fox gland lure close by my sets to have a little more smell. Hope to have better news in the am!

Nothing wrong with the dog proofs, just giving some advise. If your use bait that you have around try some honey if you have some old stuff in the house. Could be a nice change of pace to mix in and shouldn't freeze your trap up if you keep it below the trigger. I would use a small amount.

Measured out to 29 in skinned. what did you do differently....you had said in another post that they weren't hitting you dp's I didn't do anything different. I just hung in there and waited him out. I knew he was passing through. I think there are others also. I had the other 4 dps visited, but no catches. My lids were removed but no coon. I baited all my sets with mink bait and marshmallows. Lure was a hawbakers coon lure and I also put some red fox gland lure near by to get their attention. Hope to have another tomorrow!
