Wet the cardboard a bit and pull it down over the fish or muskrat. I've used muskrat with great success. Wire it to the post though. Had a lot of bait theft with muskrat. Keep it simple!

And when you run out of gasoline for your truck, just put some diesel fuel in it. Sure it will ruin your truck but at least it will not ruin the rest of our trucks!

I've had good luck using rats and like Nick said, wire them down. I've even caught rats with rats

Why don't some people like using muskrats for bait? I've seen it mentioned a couple times about not using it and was just wondering the reasoning behind it? Not trying to start anything.

Risk of catching dogs and giving trappers a bad rap.

So a fish stick won't catch a dog?

i have never caught a dog in water but in some places a possibility how high would recommend putting bait from water and cardboard? a good idea, would want to try using a stick for bait because was trying to use a slider to drown catch, all can think of else laying around is 3/8 stake and not want to loose it

I hate to say this but I have caught two dogs and several coyotes on fish sticks baited with fish so never say never. I will add the dogs were released unharmed.

Raptors and crows have an incredible sense of smell, more than most people realize. Several years ago I had no fish heads so used rats on stakes and wrapped them in grass so that it would not blow off. I wont go into details but I think you know where I'm goin with this. I remember talking to Wayne (4-fur) about this at the time and he agreed with me. Fwiw I have yet to catch any birds with a fish head, now I suppose I'll have my 1st one tomorrow!

Had another trapper use a carcass for bait on a river that runs parallel to ground I trap, did not get it covered and caught a large bird with a white head.....DNR was not happy. Took two wardens to release it. It was able to fly off.
