I was told by the warden ok as long as the extra does not help or touch a trap or furbearer of any kind in any manner then told me the driver or captain running a line will hold the licence as well.In another county I had to get a commercial fishing lic. to get in the boat just watching a friend harvest fish .Always check with your warden .

Man I hope so! Most years my GF and my dad tag along with me once or twice a year. Its a ATV ride for them. Lots of times they don't even get off the ATV.

My CO told me that anyone with me is engaged in trapping or they wouldn't be with me while I was trapping /checking traps. I make anyone who goes with me have a fur harvesters lic. I just don't trust the DNR to many different opinions and not enough of them KNOW what they are doing.

OK lots of times when I go fishing in my boat my GF goes along. She'll read books do crosswords or whatever. Even through she never touches a pole is she fishing? She does have fishing lic. by the way.
Thats almost like saying anybody that rides in a car with you needs a drivers lic.

I've had my wife with me for years. She takes the pictures. No problem. She picks up fur for me at the bridges when I have too much for the canoe. She is alone with these animals on her way home with them. No license. Two different wardens have confirmed this is fine. I guess this is one of those things I would ask your warden about and then ask if they are really willing to waste time in court if they are against it. Really goes against what the DNR should really be intersted in encouraging, which is getting more folks recreating outdoors. Who knows, maybe next year (or later) one of your ride alongs will buy a license and trap on their own.

Had a buddy along with me last week and both of our county game wardens stopped to chat as we climbed up from a ROW under a bridge. I told them "This is so-and-so, he's along for the ride to see what this trapping stuff is all about." They never said a word about it, as they shouldn't.

This is one of the reasons im not to fond of dnr 80 differant wardens with 80 differant answers dont get me wrong there thier fir good reasons just need clear cut laws for all to follow and even if i call my co hes usually to busy to pick up or return my calls thanks for the replies and all i want to do is get a few friends and others interested in trapping and its alwys nice to have a little company on the trap line

I used to run into this question all the time when I was doing outdoor articles. Never went out on a trap line but did dozens (hundreds? ) of various hunting/fishing stories. I, too found it best to check with the local warden if possible. In most cases I was told I could not take part in the hunt *in any way*. That includes the obvious, walking through cover - flushing or driving - but also, I couldn't lead a dog, help put out decoys, or even hold a gun while someone was crossing a fence. Not that this helps but I did also have a "press card" which, while not a "get out of jail free" card did add some credence to why I was there. I'd rather touch base with the warden than have to explain it in court.

I recently asked the new CO in Webster/Humboldt counties this very question as he tagged my Otter. I had my 6 and 9 year olds along. He said SOME wardens would definitely require them to be licensed. He would not. So I asked about taking my 15 yr old daughter along a couple hrs, 1 or 2 days a season, and he relied "Oh yes! She would definitely need a youth fur harvester license. But they are cheap so just get it and you won't have to worry."
I don't think it helps promote our sport to anyone just curious or interested, creating an additional road block to everyone. but you'd better abide by what the guy writing the ticket says.

when my pastor or others ride with me I always request them to wear clothes that they wouldn't like to get dirty and wear tennis shoes...I don't want them to look the part remotely of a trapper

When I take riders I tell them I they want to actually do something and get their hands dirty, get your license. If you want to just sit and observe, I would recommend getting it anyway, but it's their gamble if they want to chance it with the CO.

From the DNR regulations that give the warden discretion;
All Participants Must be Licensed - All participants in a hunt must be properly licensed and have paid the appropriate fees. It is up to the discretion of the conservation officer to determine whether or not a person is “participating.” Participation includes, but is not limited to, handling firearms or ammunition during the hunt, trying to attract game, driving, flushing, or locating game, and working dogs.
Trapping for this purpose would be considered the same way. If someone has waders on and carrying fur you would probably be considered to be participating while someone in tennis shoes watching from the road would probably not be considered to be participating. My wardens have experience and are realistic to facts thank God. I have had several "riders" and if you ride with me I don't need help and my CO knows that. LLL

I got one for ya..me and my partner caught 2 bobcats this year. Its my operation but he rides with me and set traps and baits and dispatches and everything else if its on his side of the road..its my truck my gas my everything.. when we went to tag the second cat under his license the dnr threatened to take the cat because his name wasnt on the trap and he wasnt the one who physically took it out..called my friend am illegal trapper and everything. I was pretty furious with them..think I'll register my animals in a different county next year
