Hey LLL, I love poking the bear. Humane traps, or traps designed to kill instantly, with a jaw spread as originally manufactured with an inside measurement that exceeds 8 inches, are unlawful to use except when placed entirely under water. So , anyone can take an ORIGINALLY MANUFACTURED 220 then modify it to be greater than 8" and it could still legal be set on land. My CO conceded that this is not the intent of the law, but that is how any court will interpret it. Officers doesn't like to go to court and lose. Im very proud of trappers rights and I am all for closing any loophole. open and free discussions will make us smarter trappers.

Once the jaws are "modified" it is no longer "as originally manufactured" so will still be illegal to set on dry land. Yes the measurement is inside the jaw when set.

How come they didn't have to "open the code" to change the wording of that regulation? It never used to say "inside measurement".

How come they didn't have to "open the code" to change the wording of that regulation? It never used to say "inside measurement". This was changed after last season when a trapper got a ticket and fought it in court. When the judge asked the DNR how traps were to be measured, the DNR couldn't come up with an answer so the trapper won.

It really doesn't change much but by "inside measurement" the #250 Northwoods Body Gripper is one again legal though no #280's will be yet. I thought the standard was outside measurement, that is what we were told on here is how the CO are trained to measure them. Northwoods 250 often mistakenly called a 280.... ~ADC~

Too bad Duke or MTP wouldn't make and sell a frame 7 7/8 inside and sell the jaws only.

That's why I'm going to be using the 160s for dryland.

That's why I'm going to be using the 160s for dryland. No me. I'm sticking with the 220's unless its just too small of an opening then a 160 fits the bill. It kinda irritates me though that I sold off my NW 250's because now they would be legal. There are few times where that little bit bigger trap fits the opening I want to cover better than the 220's. ~ADC~

Body grippers are measured the other direction. Without causing a big ruckus I will say from top to bottom, not side to side. I guess I am not familiar with the change adding the wording inside, but will check.

You may like poking the bear but if you keep poking you will eventually poke the wrong end and you will get bit. If you modify a trap it will not be as originally manufactured but you do what you want to. We read about guys that try to get our conibears taken every year and I am sure it will happen this year too. LLL

Guess I don't know what is going on. I was unaware of the "change" until LLL and I discussed it today and have not seen the new reg book, but will pick one up tomorrow. I am sure of one thing though "this can not be resolved by discussion on a trapping forum". Has anyone contacted the DNR?

Question Jameye. Which picture of measuring the body gripper is correct #1 or #2? Just recalling from memory it also states in the set position. Neither picture show the set position only the springs in the compressed mode.

Either way, and in set position that trap would be legal by inside measurement but I thought it was outside last I knew until I read it in the regulations. Still even inside measurement all brands of 280's are illegal above water. Here's a link to them Gene. It's the booklet online... www.iowadnr.gov/portals/idnr/uploads/Hunting/huntingregs.pdfScroll down to page 20. ~ADC~

I did check the new regs and see what they have done. I currently have letters to 2 current DNR people and 2 who have left or retired for their take. Like everyone else here I am confused and frustrated. My guess is we will still be confused when we get a response.

The Regulation book is not a complete collection of the laws it just hits some of the high points. To see ALL the trapping regulation one must look at the Code.

I have be in contact with the DNR and find I know less than I thought I did, but I am learning slowly. Neither the Code or Ad Rule says anything about an inside measurement. The only reference to how traps are measured is a foot trap and it states measured outside. I know we were told the body grippers are measured top to bottom when set, but that is not stated anywhere. let the saga continue.
