i was looking at dnr website on regulation changes. there is no quota, just can get 2 otters per trapper statewide? you catch the otter and contact co and bring otter in to be tagged like before? then after skinning you remove head freeze and take back to co with another tag?

Skin them and take pelt and entire skull or lower jaw to tag pelt and turn in skull/jaw. No longer 24 hr reporting requirement

that would be good to do all at once, you are sure that is ok to skin and remove head and take both in? would not want to screw this up as the cites tagging and otter is a federal thing and law enforcement and penalities are severe. i guess could ask co when calling to report if they answear ph,some dont, not sure if call you back or not?most would. but rember calling to ask question years ago and ph off and no return ph. call

www.iowadnr.gov/Portals/idnr/uploads/Hunting/huntingregs.pdfThe statewide quotas for bobcats and river otters was r emoved, along with the 24-hour reporting requirement for bobcat and river otters. The bag limit for river otters was reduced from 3 to 2 to prevent too many river otters from being taken in any one area. The list of open areas for bobcats increased to include Audubon, Crawford, Dallas, Iowa, Muscatine and Poweshiek counties. Starting this year, o nly the intact skull or complete lower jaw of otters and bobcats will be collected for population monitoring purposes. (p. 21)

You don't have to turn in the carcass or skull of a cat. You are asked if you would like to. Believe it or not I know some guys that eat them. Skulls can be sold also as well as the meat. LLL

There was no previous requirement to turn in skull or lower jaw of otter. Many otter were sold on the carcass, in fact, by law the co was to personally tag the otter ON the carcass. Turning in skulls or jaws was optional.

I was kind of hoping they'd stay at three. Waaaaaaay more otters out there than the average person would believe. CO told me the number of nuisance calls (mostly farm ponds) is way up. I'm going to target them for the first time this season. I've seen as many as 5 on the ice at one time right below my house. Twice had tracks in the snow in my yard last winter. I am glad they dropped the quota so we can at least wait until they are prime.
LLL - I actually have eaten bobcat a couple times. Takes some care but remarkably good.

Bobcat is definitely quite tasty. Smoked the hind quarters and back straps. Kind of a mix between rabbit and turkey IMO.

LLL Did this change or was I strong armed by Ron Andrews? He told me I was required to give entire carcass the first year it opened. Reading the regs it does not say required or optional currently. I just moved back a month ago so been away awhile.

Maybe, but now we can go after them when they are prime and get $120+ instead of half that in November. There will probably still be more havested than in years past with a quota system.

You may be right dano.. but I'll be interested to see how it shakes out. First instinct tells me it will be the same guys out there it was last year - with one less otter to take. But, it is possible because of the "later" availability a few more guys may target them specifically. I'm just hoping I see half the sign (toilets, trails and cross-overs) I did last year. Looking forward to adding a new critter to the "lifetime" list.

Is there any place on the D.N.R website to see how many otters were turned in after the quota was reached? That would be about the only way to know if harvest goes up or down.

I prefer to call the CO ASAP, but you can wait up to 7 days to contact them. CO comes to you, tags the pelt, and takes skull/lower jaw if they want it. Done deal. Make sense?

Ok, I'm still a bit of a rookie, and don't want to mess the pelt up. Can I still sell on the carcass? Coons are no sweat, but I only caught 1 otter, and dang sure didn't want to ruin it!

He may even help you skin it if he does want it. Otter really aren't difficult, just time consuming.
