when hitting the dispersal, i don't worry about whether i am spooking beaver in a colony unless i am actually trapping where a colony exists, spring is a good time to test sets and lures and not worry about it. beaver are on the move, talked to a game manager today and i may be recieving vehicle access to some areas that the beaver are tearing up that is usually closed to vehicles, told him ain't no way i am walking 500 to 1,000 yards in to trap beaver, just don't have that kind of time but he wants the beaver gone

1st time spring trapping. Got 3 set out, was hoping to get 6 out. Barely made it out alive.
Was making a set standing in shine deep water, with chest waders on, when the bottom give way. Now I'm in mud knee deep and water to my waist, 3 ft. from the bank,in a river with strong current.
Once I get a foot out of the mud without losing my waders I've got to put it back down in the mud to get the other foot out.
Finally got close enough to the bank and the only thing to grab to help me get out was..........A beaver chewed sapling,.
After 15 mins. of pooping my waders I got out.
Might just stick to fall trapping!!!

beaver dam i hiked in about 500 yards to get to, but didn't set trap in obvious crossover as is illegal in this county park to do so...... so i set down stream in the deeper channel that curves its way down through the stream, even in wide open channels like this a beaver will still just duck its head... then set a channel above beaver dam that can be seen to the right of the ditch between the weedy area and the bank then about 200 yards north set a 330 under water at a crawl out that goes to a still standing corn field that was being combined TODAY so i know the beaver don't know it is picked yet, then set a castor mound set with 330 another 200 yards north hopefully will have catch pics tomm at these locations

out of 4 traps, 1 catch and no activity at the other 3, did move one that had collected alot of debris to a different spot and put in a foothold edge set for beaver. skinned this one on the spot as truck was over 500 yards away and just didn't feel like packin it out.

Just out of curiosity, Josh, why would setting the dam cross over be illegal in a county park? Protecting otters?

Ive tried skinning them on the spot but I found that a small plastic sled works great for pulling beaver back to the truck! Just a suggestion....

yes, not allowed to set right on crossovers for the otters, this is park is actually 1 mile SE of where the itt get together is. I got the sled out today but i used it for floating my son across the creek, alot easier to skin in the field, 15-20 min and beaver is skun. the sled works good to skin on when turned over...another beaver caught today in same set hard to see the trail LOL my son micah with beaver..in this pic she looks big in this pic of me and beaver, she looks small..wonder why? micah in sled by channel castor rub set

I noticed something else, Josh. In your son's picture he looks smarter than that beaver, but in your picture its the other way around. ;D

Got one more week make the best of it.Not smart enough to quite and won't be able to pile fur up till next fall. Good job Marty! I've got about twenty traps that I can't get to do to real high water. Haven't seen a spring runoff like this year in a long time up here. Puts a cramp on the beaver trapping. Hopefully I don't lose many traps. I'm hoping to go up to northern Minnesota for the last week of trapping if the ice goes out up there. Our season runs till the end of April.
