80% of the fur is caught in the first 20% of the season. So the season is over for many. It has been a very humbling season to date for me with no prospects for a personal best in anything! I trap every day of the season and bring home fur every day of the season. But I have had thoughts of quitting. IS IT OVER?! WAS IT OVER WHEN THE JAPANESE BOMBED PEARL HARBOR? HELL NO? WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH...My advise is to do what you gotta do. If it's not fun and your tired of contributing to BP's dividend, pull. I've decided to switch to arguably the most inefficient form of trapping...multi-specie. But variety is the spice of life. Anyone else have any tips on keeping it fun?

Guess I will not make my 1000 since I am only 1/2 way there. New sets and new line tomorrow tho. To make my season more fun Wayne I think I will go after a few coyotes and fox with snares after 2nd shot gun deer season. Coyote and fox in snares do not fare well during deer season here.

Coyote and fox in snares do not fare well during deer season here. Ha Ha! Wish I had taken a picture of the coyote I caught today. She had been clubbed and covered with a big pile of fire bush. It was almost dark by the time I got there, so light was poor. But I couldn't find my second set because they had pulled weeds from around that set to cover the coyote. I'll probably find out what happened but I bet it was some deer hunters who know me and left the coyote after reading my tag. Gotta love deer hunters! My favorite is, "I didn't realize it was in a trap, Sorry!" After they miss the first 2 shots with their slug gun you think they would know something was wrong with the picture! lol

gotta fight the good fight!!! On the quest for rats, come on ice!!! For me it has been one of the better seasons, switched alot more sets to the high ground away from water, and it has produced fairly well for coon. 95% on private ground
The one major thing I have noticed this season is that catch circles in the ditches are way down. I am a firm beleiver that with the crops coming out so early it has affected where the coon are at, just my opinion. The full moon phase is passing, I beleive it is going to start getting better, as long as we can get some cold

Dam straight it hurt! Don't know what exactly happened or it wouldn't have happened! This was one of the first Alaskas I bought and is the only one I still have without modifications. Just got home from the hospital. Gonna be a long day tomorrow but my thumb will be OK as long as I don't put any pressure on it and keep it clean!

trappers don't need no stinkin thumb, we can do it one handed if we need to (don't ask me to show you please haha) That is exactly what I said 14 months ago when I broke the left thumb beaver trapping! I waited until season closed to have it looked at and can't recall ever feeling as stupid as the Dr.s made me fell when they gave me the prognosis. So I'll try to take a little better care of this one. Gotta check traps though. Ever have a day when you wish they didn't run? That is always when the traps are full isn't it? I have some stories of tough checks due to illness, time constraints, weather, vehicle trouble, getting stuck, going through the ice, etc. I bet I'm not the only one!? I'm waiting for the sun to finish my line. Hope it goes better in the light.

Ouch!!!! Now looking at the title of this thread (80/20), how ironic that your thumb is only 20% of the digits on that hand. You still have 80% left . I've always heard that the sun will cheer you up...I'm not so sure about your situation though. Good luck Wayne. I'm sure you'll get eveything worked out...you're just that kinda guy. L8R...Ken

Wayne you want me to ask my wife for some Tampons? I can overnight them! I suspect your wife is a cross dressing dude, Brett. So that won't work! I am proud to say that I got everything checked and nearly everything pulled yesterday, by myself. Trapping is not a team sport on my line, but in emergencies like this it sure would be nice to have a partner. It sucked, but wasn't impossible. I had 6-7 dozen fish sticks preset and had just began setting up some 'rats. I sure hated to pull those sets but I'll get those mink and their babies next season... I took this beaver in a FS at least a mile from any swim-able water... Someone had taken a toe nail off the guy... Caught this mink in a colony trap I had just set... And I did bring home some 'rats... So it was an interesting day. I did find my limitations as far as what I am able to do with a broken thumb and shattered nail. I can't set 1 1/2 stoplosses or DPs. And I can only stick my right hand in a gauntlet and use it as a claw since I can not get my fingers in. I did go set up the beaver job where I had the accident, and another one. MAN WAS I CAREFUL! AND I DIDN'T USE ANY MANNINGS! I'm going to try setting some for K-9s today. If I can bed the traps it will give me something to drive around and still feel like a trapper.

Oh 65h, you have a way better memory than I do! And he did say Germans in Animal House! lol I am going to my dry dirt bridge to get some dirt for waxing. When I get back I am putting 30 kinda ready to trap MB 550s in my truck, and I'm not coming home until they are all in the ground! Hopefully I find a road killed cat or two on the way because I have not caught one kitty all year. Who's with me? Come on! Aaahhhhhhh! LMFAO

Quick! How many one armed coyote trappers do you know? I'm thinking a big fat zero! Try grabbing some equipment, go out in your yard or garden and pound in a dirt hole with one hand and a claw. More realistic, try punching in one in the middle of the closest gravel road. The ground is about that hard here. I managed 24 sets until I left my hammer laying by the last set, and called it quits. Did catch one of the problem beaver..

I know one. Merle Merideth from Troy, Iowa. Merle is/was a WW2 vet with one wooden leg and one arm thanks to the war. Yes he was a very good coyote trapper. He made his sets using a T milking stool to set on during set construction. Merle and Edith were the 12th Inductees into the ITA Hall of Fame 1998. He may have even been an O'Gorman student.

The old spring hole set for a lion, Eric. Actually, at one time I owned a dozen Mannings but sold half of them. They were my go to trap at dam breaks before I realized the value of the Hancocks. $120 apiece...oh to be a bachelor again! lol Can I borrow Merle's hammer, Gene? Mine takes about 60 licks and five minutes to set a pogo or drive in a 30" stake with my left hand. Interesting story!
