robertw that might be how its done were you are at but the 2 times I caught close to 1000 I never caught more then 50 in a day, never used a boat, never hired a skiner, never went over a 24 hour check. I know atleast a dozen guys in Nebraska and Iowa who can do a 1000 easy and they all go about it in differenet ways, the one thing they all have in common is when its time to trap they are lazer focused little if anything will stop them until the season ends.

Blackhammer those who catch big numbers could not teach you a thing or anyone else for that matter. Pushing through the days you hurt or are tired and being in top shape are just a few things. I put in my head that if I want to have my freedom from the man and his time card I better push myself every day and night. I have nothing against work but hate a job or boss. No real tricks just experience and work ethic. Just got done working out/walking and now after coffe am going to work on tuning coilsprings. LLL Don't care for the man myself LLL. ;D Good posts. I realize you need days with a hundred or more to catch thousands. I was putting the 4500 hundred in perspective.

By the way 24 hour check is how I roll. Extended is fine for some but if a trap is full I cannot catch another. LLL That's my exact philosophy as well Larry. Tried 48 hr check one year on a double line and my catch was not as high as when running 24 hrs on one line. Why give someone else a shot at a coon because my trap was already plugged with one for 2 days? I hit one line hard than move to the next. Robert there is NO ONE consistently taking over 100 coon a check in this area. Sure a few break the hundred mark for a few nights but the competition is just too thick to keep up with those types of numbers. My best year I had 1,013 caught in 26 days on a 24 hr check.

If its hard to catch a 1000 coon if it freezes up by thanksgiving, what chance does a guy have when it known to freeze up by the 10th or even earlier lol.

robertw, 100 day catches are not the norm most of the guys I know catching 1000 plus might have 1 or 2 first couple days then catches fall off sharply after that. Its more about being relentless and adjusting the plan to deal with weather, competition, and animal density so that you are always catching fur, 10-15 coon days can add up when the conditions have sent everyone else packing.
Steven it can be done after freeze up, the first year I caught a 1000, I caught the first half between Nov 10 and thanksgiving, took about a month off to finish my masters thesis then started again after Christmas and caught another 500 in DP's and buckets in January.

Shane, I'm joking.
Aint nobody gonna catch a thousand coon up this far north.
500 probably would be impossible right now.
We just dont have the coon numbers..

Coon will run as long as deep snow isn't a factor. Thinking outside the box is another factor. LLL

Distemper always I would think plays a factor. Here it seems to be very localized and you move even five, ten miles and you've got more coon again. Although I have a few spots limestone bluff denning areas were I caught good numbers of coon for fif-teen years were it has hit and I have got very few coon in those spota for ten years. I think it gets in the steamhole and kills litters year after year. I know I have talked to guys in some areas that say it has cut their catcht in a third anyway. I don't think I've seen quite that bad of an outbreak . But that sure could put a crimp in plans for a big coon catch.

It would be one of the worst things however when it breaks out it does to be spotty. I would say I see it on my line somewhere every year but I will travel aways if I must. LLL

Historically we have always had our worst distemper outbreaks during the dry years. One sick coon dies in the water and kills the next twenty that uses the water there.
